There is no central place to stay in Bangkok as the things are kind of spread out. There are many hotels where you can have the rooms at cheaper rate but if you wan to have your room near the transport then it might be expensive.

If you are backpacking look for something near Kao san road! You'll have a blast ;)

There are number of places/hotels available for stay in Bangkok. But Bangkok Yai is the best place to visit in Bangkok.

Khao San Rd. is a little crazy. I would recommend the street next to Khao San Rd - Soi Rambuttri (sic). It has tons of sleeping options and is a lot less crazy than Khao San, but is still literally one block away from said crazyness.

This is probably a little late in responding, but it might help someone else :). I'm staying in Bangkok the day before and the day after my trip in July at Lub D - Siam Square which is a well rated hostel right near MBK/other shopping. It's also within walking distance of trains. The only downside I've seen is that there aren't any elevators, which doesn't really bother me anyway as there aren't that many floors and there is a locker in both private rooms and dorm rooms to put your big bags.
