The best advice is to follow your tour guide as much as you can to places
he or she recommends; on my journey through India I had nowhere any problems, but on the last day of the trip, when the tour was over and I had a day longer in Mumbai and went with some travel mates on our own I got a short but hefty "dehli belly".
Another one is, that you should look out that the ice in your drink is not made of tape water (another bad experience with a couple of Cuba Libres in Cuba)
But overall on a journey you should do as you would do at home; wear sunscreen, drink a lot of water, don't stay too long in the sun, don't drink too much booze (as long as you're not on the wodka train, then it's the rule, that you should drink as much as you can...

Your own hygiene. Take the alcohol hand sanitizer and use liberally before eating anything and after the bathrooms. I rarely get sick, and others are quick to blame the food and ice etc when really they have in all probability just got dirty hands! If you are unlucky, cipro is better than immodium for getting rid.
Make sure you have all the recommended vaccines and antimalarials.
Also an internal money belt is very useful for keeping your stuff safe.

I highly recommend the use of probiotics. I always buy some probiotic pills and start taking them a few weeks before I go and continue taking them during the trip. Never been sick yet on a trip!

Sanitizer, cypro just in case and bottled water, including using it to brush your teeth....happy trails!
If it does not bring you joy, why are you doing it?

Local yogurt (with live bacteria) as soon as possible after arriving. It introduces some of the local "good" bacteria to help conteract the "bad" bacteria you'll encounter despite following all the above great advice.

Drink lots and lots of water. It not only keeps you hydrated during the flight, it will also keep those hangovers at bay to. Drink local water if its drinkable, but if you encounter the jelly belly, switch back to bottled water, even if they say local water is Ok to drink, your system just might not be used to it. Alternatives like Iced Tea and Sprite are good as an alternative in the heat and "something different" which makes sure the hydration levels are kept up. Coffees OK, as long as you make up for it with somesort of other liquid thats not caffeinated. Avoid chicken and prawns.. and also the restaurants that haven't anyone in them, and go to the ones the locals use instead.
Be kind to your stomach, and keep it simple, especially in the first couple of days when your system is still trying to get used to a new environment. Unusual and rich foods can just set things off because your system isn't used to taking them.
Walk everywhere you can in the daytime, with local safety advice taken of course. Keep your head when your out and about, dont go walking in back alleys late at night just because you have to get home cheaply. Dance your socks off at every opportunity!
That said, don't be afraid to try new things, thats why you're travelling, just use your brains and you'll be fine.
