How to pack walking poles?!

Postby catherine! » Wed Jun 30, 2010 11:34 am

So I just started packing for my trip to Peru leaving this Saturday..
I'm packing into a holdall type bag and I've got telescopic walking poles for the Inca Trail. But I just realised there is no way my poles are going to fit in the bag.
Presumably I can't take them on as hand luggage? I'm flying with Continental and it doesn't mention it on their website. Should I just tape them securely around my holdall and check it in and hope for the best?

What about a over bag meant for air travel? Would they fit in then?

Perfect! I've got a big transit bag thing that my cousin lent me ages ago and I'd forgotten about. Just tried it and the holdall and poles fit perfectly. Thank you for reminding me!

Glad the poles fit. I also found it was a good idea to put some extra duct tape wrapped around the ends in a ball shape to keep the points from poking thru.
Remember, poles on the Trail need to have rubber tips, per regulation, to protect the trail. And, when the stone and stairs are wet the rubber tips work better anyway.

Enjoy!!

A walking pole related question:

Anyone know of a good walking pole that doubles as a good monopod for an SLR or small video camera?

I know ones built specifically for this dual purpose exist and I've tried tracking down some nice ones before but have never had any luck...

REI here in the States carries one. Here's the link:

I think in Canada MEC might be the alternative.

Thanks graybeard!
Haven't seen a similar item at MEC, but that looks quite solid. Gives me something to work from .... much appreciated.
