Planeterra's website has been revamped. Check out videos, details about our worldwide community projects and how you can contribute to Planeterra's work with local partners in Asia, Africa and Latin America, or take a volunteer trip (voluntour) and really experience what giving back through travel can be like!

Good site to explore.Very informative. And just love the whole concept of promoting voluntourism as an alternative to easy travelling.
I note the links to 'Partners".
But in your Partners, are you missing something? You've probably considered this already, but where is your partnership with OUR local communities?

Here's my off the wall idea, based on our experience of the reaction of our friends and community to my volunteer project and our upcoming family voluntour to Africa.
There are many we know who would love to do the same. They have the right attitude, good skills with a lifetime in social services, teaching, building ,computers etc.But they haven't got the money. There are a whole lot of people out there, that want to do this.
And there are a host of at risk kids who could be turned around by giving them a chance they'd never have with such a character building experience.
Hold that thought.
I am also involved with service organisations. Now they are struggling with raising funds these days, and also of coming up with new ideas to capture the public's attention for giving.

So my suggestion was to create a 'schoolorship' in partnership with say either of Rotary, Lions International, Friendship Force.Where they work in the community to raise a share of the funds to send someone on a voluntour.
And each year as adequate funds are achieved, the service organisation advertises to the public, seeking applications for that voluntour.
Now you at Planeterra may see marketing benefits in that .As you'll get a new way of raising awareness of the voluntours on offer.
I could elabourate more.Hopefully you may feel there is merit :D

Here's another example where Planetera or travel companies promoting voluntourism may want to look at broadening or forming partnerships with our local community.
http://desertelephant.org/a.gariseb.php
Planeterra develop programs whereby Schools , colleges, universities may be encouraged to form links with some of these projects in a similar fashion to how EHRA and King Alfred's School are doing.
It may give the kids and the parents the incentive to fund raise in their community, to operate exchanges for groups to head off to Project Brasil, or Project Kenya.
And just as importantly , spread the seed of the objectives of voluntourism within a wider community base than is current. All those kids at those institutions would grow with an awareness it is the thing to do.That probably is happening now with Gap year experiences. But Planeterra could become instrumental in facilitating much more. Not sure how much this is happening in North America, but there's not much like it downunder.....

In my vision, I can see 'Voluntourism' becoming the new age VSA,or Boy Scouts or Girl Guides. It can be that character building for youth .

Thanks for the inspiration Jimshu. We actually have some ideas brewing of that nature. Expect to see some interesting developments in the upcoming months and years. It's only going to get bigger and better as time goes on. In fact our new director was hired to take Planeterra to the next level. I'm going to pass on this idea though to all the staff to make sure those that haven't been on here read it too. Cheers
