Credit Card or Debit Card Just For Traveling

I have a credit card that automatically pays for internet service, paper, phone bill, cable service etc. Losing the card on a trip means a lot of disconnects back home, hence a lot of problems. Especially if your trip is a month or two.

To alleviate this problem, I have a credit card just for traveling. Most banks have no annual fee credit cards. Lose it and there is just the card to deal with.

Also, before traveling, contact the card company advising them of what countries and dates you'll be traveling. Otherwise they may block your card, thinking it has been stolen.

Here's another credit card tip.
Get a free card. Cancel it, but keep the card. If you are robbed, hand over this card, with your 'real' card safely tucked away. That way, the thief is happy, and so are you!

i spoke to a rep at VISA today about "overpaying" my credit card before i leave....

that way i can use it for cash advances without incurring the daily interest rate however, if you choose this option, note that when you add a payment this way, it takes about 3 business days to clear so make sure you do this well before your departure date!

For US residents, check out Capital One credit cards. They not only NOT charge you fx fees (typically 2%), they also reimburse you the 1% that Visa/MC charges.

i've also been advised that credit cards with a "chip" on them are better for security purposes since you need a PIN to use them...if you want a new card issued, it takes 7-10 days for visa or master card to issue them in canada...(since i'm leaving sooner than that, i had to pay $25 for mastercard to courier the new card to me in 2 days.)

i thing go for the debit card there as no probs with debit card because without security code u can not use.

debit card is the best option.

Hi thanks for the info bout that cancelled credit card being handed to the thieves. Actually its my fear to lost my ''real''credit card bec just like all of you our bills mainly depends on it. Having a cancelled credit card is a great relief.

One word of warning, at least in the UK.

Some Companies state that you are still liable if the card is used after it has been canceled. Whilst it is unlikely any payments will be accepted by the card, you may want to slightly scratch the mag strip or the chip as a further measure.
