Peru - Amazon Jungle vs Lake Titicaca

Postby jrhuang » Fri Jan 20, 2012 1:04 am

I know I want to do the Inca Trail and maybe include Amazon Jungle or Lake Titicaca into the itinerary. Time and money may prevent me from doing both. I'm curious if anyone has gone to both and provide some insight between which they enjoyed more? Or if you've even gone to one of the locations and share what you thought of it.

I opted out of the Jungle and loved the Lake, I don't feel that we missed anything in the jungle when we talked to some of our travel mates who went.

I think the Amazon is only worth it if you do the 5 day extended trip. The 3 day is basically a day to get there and one to get back. You really don't get much time with the 3 day.

Have done both. And the answers depends on your interests. Lake T is several long days on slow boats getting to/from the islands. Nice scenery and the islands and their peoples are interesting. The Amazon is for critter watching - birds, reptiles, monkeys and the like.Yes, whether you go for the 3 or 5 day you spend the better part of a day getting in and getting out on a motorized "canoe". But, many more things to see from these boats along the shoreline. I agree with DanielBMe that if you have the time (and money), opt for the 5 day option. Go to the bird licks. Amazing experience at dawn when these hundreds of various species of macaws and parrots descend for their "snack".

Went to the Napo River in the Amazon Basin in Ecuador with G....an amazing experience in my opinion. Haven't been to the Lake, but friends went on there and reported they were ill from the altitude. I'd go back to the Amazon in a minute.
