Onwards from La Paz

Postby whitling2k » Mon Jul 04, 2011 3:58 pm

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with some advice and answers to a few questions I've got.

We are going on the Andean Empire tour, finishing in La Paz. We plan to spend a few days in La Paz before continuing on in to Chile and then Argentina.

Our plans to date are to fly between La Paz and Arica and then travel by bus to San Pedro de Atacama, then finally by bus to Salta.
We are giving ourselves about 2 weeks for this starting at the beginning of November this year - is this realistic in two weeks?

Are these places busy at this time of year and will booking tickets/accommodation in advance be a good idea?

How easy is it to book flights from La Paz to Arica locally at this time of year? Do flights go every day?

Do buses travel between the other destinations daily? How much in advance would we need to book them, or could we turn up on the day?

Is it best to get the bus straight from Arica to San Pedro, or would it be quicker/cheaper to change somewhere else in Chile?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,

Look at Flight Stats Website
http://www.flightstats.co.uk/home.do

Arrivals at Arica shows some traffic from La Paz. Probably bookable via
a travel agency in Bolivia.

Thanks Eric - That site looks useful.

I don't suppose anyone has got experience of booking/finding accommodation in San Pedro de Atacama or Salta in October, or knows how frequently the busses run between Arica/San Pedro/Salta?

Hi,

Hope this helps:

1) San Pedro de Atacama. Either arrive with USD Cash (say 20 USD notes plus 5 USDs) - enough for a few days - or Chile Pesos from previous location . The ATMs have been known to be empty for several days.
On a normal day the place runs on Chile Pesos. But when needs must USDs are accepted.

2) Suggest you find the Chile "TUR BUS" website to start research on bus times.
