Ipad Uses in South America

Postby tina.x » Mon Apr 18, 2011 3:03 pm

Just wondering if there are any particularly good uses for the ipad (or a laptop) in South America. I currently do not own an ipad but am doing the Great South American Journey in a few weeks with further travel afterwards so thought it might be a good purchase for many months away. For all its positives, it can obviously make you a target to thieves but I do plan on being careful. So essentially I want to know whether it's recommended and whether people take their laptops/ipads with them to these countries.

Any advice would be much appreciated

Laptops are certainly useful with communicating back home. There is wifi available at most hotels in South America. However I personally would not take an Ipad with me.

I did the Great South American journey last year and used my ipod touch for internet access - most of the places we stayed had free wifi. However quite a few people did take small laptops which had the added advantage of being used to upload photos along the way (a good way to back them up) and being able to use skype face to face instead of just like a phone on the ipod.

Why is a laptop acceptable to take but not an iPad? Surely the risks are the same for any gadget/ electronic device? Or do u mean that a laptop has far more uses and is therefore recommended over the iPad?

I used my ipad for my Southern Africa trip a few weeks ago and I preferred it over my netbook. I was still able to download all my pictures on it, email and skype (voice only) when around a connection, read books and magazines (the app zinio is great), watch movies, listen to music and play games. Plus it is a lot lighter and smaller than my old net book and was much faster and the battery life was amazing. it was a lifesaver on an 11 hour flight where my in flight entertainment screen was broken and on some of the long bus rides.

I haven't had any problems with fitting it in some of the hotels safes as it is quite small. There were a couple of times that I stuck it in my day pack and took it with me. It is so light that I never noticed it. I would just never pull it out in an environment where I felt that it would make me a target.

It's a personal thing, I would be far less heartbroken if someone stole/broke my cheap old netbook, than if my ipad went awol.

Wondering if you actually had time to meet and socialise with your fellow travellers with all this entertainment going on?

I don't think taking an iPad/laptop would prevent me from socialising with fellow travellers. It's just simply for long planes journeys and travelling between countries etc

When you travel 40 hours to get to your destination, you need some distraction. Trust me, there was lots of socialization going on.

Personally when I travel it's to ''get away from it all'' so I really don't want to stay too connected to home.

In all my travels I was always able to find an internet cafe for quick updates, or I use my Ipod Touch in Wi-Fi areas.

It's just me, but I prefer to travel with less technology.

I agree with both sides of the conversation/agrument. However, I think I would freak out if anything went 'missing' while travelling. I think that if you want to do something to keep occupied a much smaller, easy to keep on you thing would be something like an itouch or iphone.

If you are doing any hiking where you would leave your main pack and things at a hotel - you have to make the decision on if you feel comfortable leaving it behind or if you will want to carry it everywhere and possibly get annoying... it's the same as bringing an SLR camera - leave it behind to go missing or carry it with its weight (however the pictures are priceless :) )

I used my Ipad the whole time I was in South America last year.

It was fantastic in every way. I never felt like it was going to get stolen. Always used it in Hotel Lobbies everywhere, of course never flashed it around in the streets but that is just common sense.

So much better than a laptop, for the weight reason obviously. And it is also considerably cheaper to lose then most laptops..

I would highly recommend you purchase it..it really comes in handy on the long bus rides, and when you can get the wireless to work in your room at a hotel (sometimes).. fantastic for communicating back home.
