Chicago to San Fran

Hi,
I was thinking of going on the Chicago to San Fran road trip.

It looks really interesting, has anyone been on this trip, anyone have any feedback/recommendations or comments?

Am thinking of going sometime in late August or early Sept.

I'd be very grateful for any feedback, positive and negative on this before i book it.
