I'm assuming you're talking about San Jose, Costa Rica.... I used the GAP arrival transfer option. For me after flying many hours, standing in lines, etc. my brain turns to fudge. So, have this taken care of ahead of time saves me additional hassle.

Taxis are really easy to get into San Jose. Buy a ticket at the official taxi stand and take official airport taxis only. I had no problem taking a taxi. In general San Jose is a safe city.

If you are a nervous traveler, solo traveler, inexperienced traveler, speak no spanish, and/or are arriving after dark then the GAP transfer is worth it. When I took the trip 2 years ago it was a mix of which mode people used. I found taxis much easier and much safer than when I was in Mexico. I should note that I am a small female and only speak broken Spanish.

I'm planning to take a taxi from the SJO airport to the joining hotel for the Costa Rica Quest. I speak basic Spanish and was wondering if it's easier to just show a piece of paper with the hotel name and address/phone number rather than risk mispronouncing the directions.

I always have it written down as a backup. If the taxi driver doesn't understand my Spanish, I show him the paper. (He won't necessarily tell you that he doesn't understand your Spanish, so watch for puzzled looks.)

Yes, 100 times yes. Wherever I go I always carry the address of the hotel on a piece of paper so I can hand it to a taxi cab driver. I have even done this in the USA where I speak the native language (although not all the cab drivers do.)

Taxi from San Jose airport to the hotel was quick and easy. We had the name of the hotel, went to the taxi booking station, spoke to a representative and they arranged the taxi for us. They all spoke English at the airport. It saved us quite a bit of money from Gap's tranfer option, I think Gap charged $25 per person, the taxi for the two of us was maybe $20 total. No need to book ahead.

Well, taking a taxi isn't necessarily a money-saver if you're travelling solo and get stuck in traffic with the meter running, like I did! It turned out to cost close to $30 for me, so maybe next time I'll just get the transfer.

Does anyone have an update on cab fares from the SJO airport to the joining hotel for CRQ. My daughter and I will be arriving late November and G is asking $60 for an airport transfer which seems quite steep to me. I'm trying to determine if the convenience/sense of security is worth the price they're charging.

Thanks
