Mexico Currency Question

Postby amalia10481 » Tue Feb 02, 2010 9:02 pm

I'm going on the Mayan Sun tour in February, and so will only be in Cancun and Playa del Carmen in Mexico, for a total of 3-4 days. Since I'm in Mexico such a short time and it's only the major resort areas, is it recommended/necessary to exchange US dollars into pesos or can US dollars be used?

US dollars are widely accepted in Cancun and Playa, you shouldn't have any problems.

It's easy to change your pesos to dollars and back again too. Not sure what kind of exchange you get when you use dollars instead of pesos. Eveyone accepts pesos.

I'm still planning my first trip, but I have been advised that ATMs are very common, so you should have no problem getting cash in the local currency once you hit Cancun. Probably better than bringing a lot of cash.

scarl is right: ATMs are the way to go. You can convert back to USD when you leave (bills only, not coins).

Hi,

I've just completed trip CAM, so I think I did this bit in reverse direction to you.
I think you are going into Belize after Cancun / Playa de Carmen.
Agree with what has been said before. Except to add I expect you should be able
to change left over Mexico currency into Belize Currency as you cross the border.

Belize - you can spend US D there easily. 1 USD = 2 Belize everywhere.
Coming into Belize from Guatemala, when changing left over Guatamala Quetzals we
were offered a slightly better rate of 2. something Belize for 1 USD.
Was a bit surprised that money changers at one crossing were happy to change coins as well as notes.

As usual, 50 USD notes not particularly welcome everywhere. Don't think of using 100 USD.
All USD notes must be in very good condition, not torn or corners torn off.

Regards
