Nicaragua?

Has anyone been on the Nicaragua trip recently? It intrigues me. I've been to Guatemala and it sounds like Nicaragua may also be an interesting place, off the beaten track.

I went on the tour in 2012, so a couple years ago. It reminded me a lot of Guatemala. The volcano boarding is amazing, and I loved San Juan Del Sur. We spent the day at a nearby beach...at Playa Hermosa Surf Camp, they filmed Survivor Nicaragua there. Absolutely beautiful area.

Slightly different question but what was Guatemala like? In terms of safety. Especially going through the city to get to the airport.

In both countries, I booked an airport pickup through G Adventures.

There was a glitch in Nicaragua, so I booked one of the airport taxi guys.

With Guatemala, I just looked for the guy holding a sign with my name on it, and he dropped me off at the joining hotel.

At the end of the tour to get back to the airport, I just booked through the hotel when the tour ended.

As far as wandering around on your own in both Antigua and Granada if you're alone before your tour starts, just use common sense. Keep your camera your backpack where it isn't obvious to anyone, twist tie your zippers together if you're going to be in a busy area like a market, wear a money belt etc.

Guatemala was fine. Just take the usual precautions. I stuck to the little tourist vans which will take you from your hotel directly to the airport. You just have to watch yourself on some of the trails around Lake Atitlan and in Guatemala City. I stayed there for one night, near the central square and the retail/restaurant strip on Avenida 7. Lots of police around and security guards with shot guns at the front of every store.

Thanks for the info, ballu.

I went in November so I'm not sure what August is like...maybe think about a rain jacket, waterproof shoes and a rain cover for your daypack.

I don't remember a lot of rain, maybe it was overcast and drizzly a day or two, but mostly it was sunny and dry.

Hi Ian,

I recently returned from this trip. I can't compare Nicaragua to Guatemala as I haven't been to the latter, however I really enjoyed the trip. I thought it was a great mix of interesting cities, culture, unique landscapes and fun activities (e.g. hiking, surfing etc).
