Cambodia and Vietnam on a shoestring...

Postby annapix » Thu Mar 14, 2013 7:19 pm

Hey,
I just booked my Cambodia and Vietnam on a shoestring tour, from December 18th 2013 to January 6th 2014.
Just wondered if anyone else is signed up to this yet.. maybe a little in advance at the moment :)
Would be cool to chat to some people about it.

Hey Anna,

Me and my other half are booked on for the same dates as you. I'm swaying between hugely excited and a bit nervous, I've never really done the whole travelling thing before! Are you flying straight out or is it part of a longer trip for you?

Hi Callie,
I am feeling exactly the same, would be great to chat about it.
Are you having any jabs? I asked my nurse about yellow fever and she said I don't need it...!
I will get malaria pills nearer the time but I think thats about it?
Where are you from?
I am flying straight out there, I think that is the scariest bit actually, arriving and meeting everyone!

Hi Anna,

I'm not sure too sure about jabs, we are seeing the nurse in November time, I'm pretty sure Yellow Fever isn't necessary unless you've recently been somewhere which has it, then I think it's all the normal stuff, tetanus, typhoid and Hep A. Never taken Malaria tablets before so that will be a first!
We are from just outside Southampton and are flying from London, we are off to Phuket first for about a week, it will be out Honeymoon and I wanted a few days at least of luxury!! How about you, where are you coming from? Are you arriving on the first day of the tour or a little bit before?

Hi guys.
I have done this trip and you have nothing to worry about. Your CEO will look out for you.
If you end up in Hoi An on new years eve you will be amazed. Watch Top Gear special Vietnam. I won't say to much as I don't want to spoil it for you all.
If anybody would like any advice or tips give me a shout.
I see someone on here lives near Southampton. I live in Southampton as well.

Amazing trip for a honeymoon I expect! I'm flying from London and arrive the morning of the meeting! Ill be so get lagged haha! Will have to power through.
Yeah I've never taken the tablets either, I think I've had all the jabs in that case! Just need to sort out visas and stuff now.

Phil: thanks for offering advice I'm sure ill need plenty! I'm just wondering things like what to take and what not to take, did you carry much money on you or just take a little, I have one of those cards they offer you that you can too up... I might have just got roped into spending more money on that one though who knows!

Getting really excited about it now!!

Hey Anna

You can get your visa from the vietnam embassy in London. Its easy. Rather than post your passport, Royal Mail hmmm say no more.
Embassy of Vietnam. 12-14 Victoria Road, London W8 5RD

Things to take... Toilet roll, you may laugh. small towl, quick dry one. you can buy cheap t-shirts(koh San road Bangkok) when you are out there. ear plugs or descent headphones, a small sleeping bag, you will have blankets on the night trains, but I rather use a sleeping bag.
2x debit cards. if you loose one, you have a back up. there are plenty of cashpoint machines through out your trip.. oh and the cash comes out first then the card, thats how I lost my card. $200 ideal to exchange or back up plan.

As for malaria tablets. we didnt worry about taking them, we all felt safe. But please don't take my advice and seek medical advice.

Give me a shout if you need any advice.

Ahh that's great thank-you!
I am going to try and get my Vietnam visa this week, do I need to take anything other than my passport with me?
I think going there is a much better idea than risking posting my passport!

Hey Anna

http://www.vietnamembassy.org.uk/

I would send your application via fax a few days before you head to the embassy.
Also turn up a bit earlier than the opening time. Pay with cash.
Bet you can't wait to go.

I'm really excited and really nervous haha!
Thanks for that link ill get on the case tonight! I better get some more passport photos done it suggest you take some with you too, for the other visas! It won't matter if they are different to my passport photo though I guess? As that's fairly out dated now to how I look haha!
I'm going to look into a decent easy compact sleeping bag and towel online! The smaller the better I reckon! I'm not the best at packing light ;) it will be good for me! :)
