Getting around Oz - Any suggestions?

Postby jennyn » Sat Jul 31, 2010 4:35 pm

Hi Everyone,

Myself and my boyfriend will be in Australia for 8 months from June 2011 (after spending 4 months in South East Asia) - we will be in Western Oz for about a month and then the remaining 7 we are planning to travel from Adelaide to Cairns.

Just wondering what the best/cheapest way to travel is? I have seen details of the Greyhound/Oz experience buses and am confused about which is the best one! We dont really want to be tied to a schedule, but more just need transport to get us from place to place.

Any suggestions/advice you guys may have will be really appreciated :D

i live in Australia.
it is definitely a lot cheaper to do it yourself rather than a tour company.
Best ways to travel are by train or bus if you really want to see the country. There are a lot of deals offered on the tourist trail (Adelaide to Cairns) which are usually a good way to go.
I havent travelled on Greyhound or Oz experience but ive heard that Greyhound is not really as accommodating as Ozexp as you cant just stop whenever you want its more of an A to B thing. Ozexp is probably more accommodating.
Just as fuel for thought, i would suggest an internal flight from Adelaide to Melbourne or Sydney (wherever you want to head to next) as the countryside is not that exciting between those destinations and it is very time consuming. If your looking at the right time, flights can actually be a lot cheaper than travelling those routes via bus or train.
Hope this helps
