I think I'll look up this train/tram cos I always enjoy the arrival in a new country and traveling like the locals do. Then again we may need to get a taxi to get there faster in time to join the group for the first night. I reckon it'll be 7pm before we reach the hotel and we could find ourselves abandoned! If that happens please ask the tour leader to leave details with reception of where you've gone for dinner or whatever...you never know, we may find you :)

I've made a note and will make sure the tour leader leaves instructions re dinner at the desk. I wouldn't want you to be that weird couple (there's one on every tour) who get in too late and miss our first-night dinner/drinking/bonding and we don't meet you until the morning of day 2 and by that time we've branded you as outsiders and over the ensuing two weeks never quite let you into our original circle.

I'm liking this train/tram thing more and more. It's only TL1.50 each leg, and it might actually be faster, considering the problems I've had with taxi drivers not being able to find the hotel in numerous countries.

I agree Chris, taking the Tram will be part of the adventure. There's good directions in our "Before you go" gadventure package on getting from the airport to the hotel.

I also collected a little info from my local Travel Health Unit. Malaria is not a primary concern, as Chris said. They recommended the following precautions: Bug repellent with at least 30% DEET to protect from mosquitoes and sand flies, vaccination against Hep A, Immodium, and 6 Ciprofloxin tablets in case of travelers diarrhea. I'm a little cautious due to an unfortunate experience in Mexico, LOL

Snow is almost all melted here now, first sings of spring have sprung, and we are so happy that the temp has risen above 0'c. Our restaurant patios open April 1, and I expect to be one of the first sitting our there holding a frosty mug through my mitts, sipping beer in the sunshine :D

Exactly Chris, we don't wanna be THAT couple, haha. Even if the tour leader leaves a mobile number at reception we should be able to borrow a phone to call & track you all down :)

What does everyone have down as the start hotel?

My original paperwork says Newport. Travel agent said it changed to Metropole. G Adventures website says Centrum :-S

Cheers,
KT.

Hi everyone, This is my first GAP tour, so hopefully it will be good. I can't wait to see sites of Turkey. I'm travelling from Australia via Dubai. I'm having a night in Dubai before arriving in Istanbul on afternoon of 12th, so will meet you all at the intro that night. I've booked the ballooning. A few years ago I went ballooning in Luxor - early start but well worth it. As far as malaria goes, I'm bring some insect repellent - no tablets, etc. That's what my doctor recommended. Hopefully weather will be warming up over in Turkey - its getting colder here.

See you on the 12th - I' ve booked transfer from airport to hotel.

Hi shirleyg! Well see you in 2 weeks. And at the Hatay Hotel, not the Metropol. I assume everyone got the notification today? Looks like the Hatay is the next street up from the Metropol, so getting there is just as easy.

I'm glad I'm not the only solo traveller, Chris. Your website looks like you are a stand up comedian so we will be entertained on the tour as well.

Hi,
I am actually going on the Turkey on a Budget trip which departs on the 10th. I had a question regarding the packing and weather for this trip if anyone has been to the country or has been on a Gap trip. I was considering going light with a carry on suitcase with rollers or use my camping backpack with frame. The weather seems to be 55-70 F is this throughout the country?

This will be my 7th Gap/G trip. I've always used a huge bag on wheels and I've never had a problem lugging it around.

It looks like the Mediterranean gets into the 80s in May, so I'll probably bring a wide mix of clothes--shorts, jeans, a jacket and maybe a sweatshirt.

This is also our first trip of this sort and were wondering about that too. How much carrying of luggage will we have to do? Will bring a bigger suitcase to fill with Turkish treasures if I don't have to lug it around a lot. Wondering if we carry the bags directly from the bus to the hotel/boat or if we will have to keep it on us for lengths of time..
