DCHM Highlights of Morocco June 2-15

Postby jcieslak » Thu Apr 26, 2007 1:54 pm

Hi, A couple of questions:

1. On our list of things to bring (at the top) is sleeping bag. It looks like we're staying in hotels the entire trip, other than a night in Merzouga where we stay in tents. Is a sleeping bag necessary for this trip?

2. Currency. I have read that if you arrive on a Saturday, it will be difficult to impossible to exchange money in Morrocco. Is this true? I'm trying to buy local currency before deparature but it's proving to be more difficult than expected. Are euros excepted in Morocco or at least for the first couple of days in Casablanca?

Hi Jacki. In answer to your questions.

1. I asked this same question to my travel agent who phoned GAP on the spot. The one night in Merzouga I was told is really the only time a sleeping bag could come in handy. However, GAP told my travel agent that many people just buy a cheap blanket that are sold near by. That is what I am going to do. Don't want to carry my sleeping bag if I don't have to.

2. According to my Lonely Planet guide, the Moroccan Dirham is a restricted currency and is not available outside the country. Banks are closed on weekends however Foreign-Exchange Bureaus are open and it sounds as if there are quite a number in Casablanca. There is one at the Mohammed V Int'l Airport that opens to coincide with arrivals. Sounds like Euros and US $ are well accepted. It is my plan to use my credit card for purchases, carry dirhams in small denominations and have US $ in a money belt for emergencies. Travellers cheques are now a thing of the past with ATMs being just about everywhere.

Hope this helps

Later . . . Joe

Thanks, Joe, that helps quite a bit. I think I'll buy a blanket too. I'd hate to carry a sleeping bag all that way and for all that time for 1 night.

Thanks, too, for the currency info. I think I'll bring cash in both euros and USD and try the TravelMoney card from AAA that I'll load up with $s before leaving. I'll use my credit card and debit card as a backup. I get into Casablanca in the middle of day so the exchanges should be open.
I almost ran out of money in Russia and many years ago in Belize and Guatemala. It's now become a fear of mine. Better too much than not enough, but I'm really not comfortable carrying around lots of cash.
