Sleeping Bags in Africa - Nov/Dec

Postby leighge » Thu Jul 04, 2013 8:41 pm

Hi, I am taking part in the Jo'burg to Nairobi overland tour that departs late Nov 2013. I'm just wondering if it is possible to hire sleeping bags for this tour, or if they will even be be needed given the time of year? I am taking this tour as part of a longer holiday and don't want to lug about a sleeping bag for the rest of the time just for this trip.

I have a sleep sheet and would be happy with just that if the weather is warm enough!

Thanks!

I took an overland trip from Nairobi to Johannesburg in December/January many years ago. While most nights a sheet would probably work, there were many nights that got quite cold. Cold enough that people wore long sleeves and layers.

While I wouldn't bring a traditional sleeping bag, I had a sleeping bag with a sheet on one side and a heavier layer on the other side (like a light blanket). Depending on the temperature, you would have the appropriate layer on top.

The Ngorogoro crater, the Okavango delta (because it rained solid), and another night at higher altitude was quite chilly. Approximately 5 nights of a 35 day trip I used the warmer side.

Good luck
