Currency

Postby dan3005 » Fri May 17, 2013 1:33 pm

Hi guys. I am doing the botswana and overland falls trip in June. Just wondering what currency is best as read differing things. I know I need South African rand in South Africa which I can get in the uk. But what about for botswana and zambia???? Is US dollars the best bet? Will I be able to easily exchange it there for local currency ( pula in botswana and kwacha in zambia)?? Will the guides advise us where to exchange money? :D

USD's for sure.

GBP is easily exchangeable in South Africa, but elsewhere on your trip its best to go for USD's. Rands are also acceptable in some bordering countries of South Africa, so don't worry about having too much Rand.

Incidentally ATM's are pretty OK throughout that area, just time your withdrawals so you have enough cash to last for 4 or 5 days. Take a mixture of cash, debit, credit or prepaid cards.

Is there enough places to change the USD's into local currency?

When we travelled in South Africa, Botswana, and Zambia with G several years ago, we got S. African Rand in Canada before leaving. When we crossed the border into Botswana our CEO took us to the exchange office where we got Pula (and we were able to exchange these back for Rand when we returned to South Africa). In Zambia, we were able to use USD to pay for any of the optional activities we wanted to do while in Livingstone. We never did exchange for kwacha.

We did the Delta, Dunes, and Falls trip and we only brought a bit of US currency as emergency money.

The bank machines work great with your bank card! The guide on the trip know exactly where to stop to get cash from the machines. We managed to get a second bank card from our bank just in case the machine grabbed the card and didn't spit it back out. We had heard stories about that.

Also, do not use bank machines where your back is to the street with no security. One of the members of our group got mugged at a bank machine. Use the machines indoors or guarded. My husband stood facing the street while I used a machine when necessary.

All in all, getting money was as easy as at home. :)
It's the journey, not the destination.
