Land of the Maharajas

Postby browncroughta » Wed Aug 15, 2012 9:18 am

We have booked trip to India, Land of the Maharajas starting 29th Sept. We noticed on tour details that rucksacks were advised. I would like to know if we can take suitcases as we were hoping to have room to bring home souvenirs etc. Our allowance is 25kg ea. Many thanks. Kathleen & Barry

We won't stop you from bringing a suitcase, but you may find it easier to navigate streets and markets with a backpack. We've picked up an extra bag to check with souvenirs a few times, and more than once I've been one of those people who have checked a cardboard box.

Got your reply but I didn't understand exactly what you said about navigating streets and markets. Do you mean a small backpack to carry around during the day? We would be doing this anyway. Are we expected to carry our main luggage around all day? We thought that once we got to our hotels we would leave our luggage there until we moved to next destination and then that we would only have to carry it to a coach or other transportation. We would have no problem with this. I await your reply. Kathleen

I'm not sure about your particular trip but on most trips you will rarely have to carry your bags any distance where it isn't smooth enough for a wheeled bag. On the 6 trips I've been on with G Adventures only on one trip did I need to be able to carry my bag any distance and that was in Guatemala where we had to walk 4 blocks to the city bus stop and then walk through a crowded market to get to the out of town bus. The streets were cobblestone so a wheeled bag was useless. I've found that the best solution for me is a wheeled backpack. Most of the time the wheels work best - airports, long hallways in hotels, paved streets etc. but when the going gets rough (literally) you unzip the straps and carry the bag.

Most of the time you will be dropping off your bags at your hotel on arrival at a destination and when you stop on route you can usually leave them on the bus and the driver will watch them (just don't leave your valuables on the bus just in case).
