Postby robertscott » Fri Jun 08, 2012 11:03 am

Hi,
I am joinging the Quest of the gods tour on the 22nd of this month, i have investigated in to what currency i will require but i would like some extra advice.
I have been told that as well as the peruvian sol, US dollars are also accepted as a currency. Can you give me an idea on which is bset to take for general use, tipping etc...

Thanks,

Robert

Bring USD. You can exchange them in Peru for Sols. Your G guide can recommend reliable currency exchange sites... stay away from the street vendors. Use Sols for food, small purchases, etc. Gratuities are also better in Sols, esp. for Inca Trail. Yes, you can use USD for larger purchases at some merchants, but the exchange rate they give you are not likely to be the best. Pristine USD, no bills over $50. No rips, tears, folds, etc. etc.

Agree with the above, no need to get Soles beforehand, the exchange rate probably won't be good. You can pay for a cab to your hotel in USD. I hit an ATM right in the airport to get local currency before I even picked up my checked luggage. If you're staying in Miraflores there are a lot of banks with ATMs around that main park.

Local currency for most meals and other things. USD for bigger expenses. Newer USD in good condition...I don't know if 2003 is still the standard but for sure nothing older than that.
