Choosing the 'My Own Room' option-safety in South East Asia

I am a 27 year old female traveling on the Essential Vietnam and Cambodia trip AVEV in July 2012 and i am considering choosing the 'My Own Room' option since I am not really comfortable with rooming with people I don't know and I also like to have my own space. Ive had roommates before in college and when i studied abroad but i have always know them so it hasn't been an issue.
However, the only thing i am concerned with is safety because I am not sure if it is safe to be in a hotel room all by myself.
Is the group usually put in rooms next to each other or close by?

Has anyone chosen this option before?

Any advice is appreciated!
