Airport Pickup

Postby keith2004 » Fri Mar 09, 2012 11:27 am

I was curious about the aiport pickup costs, I am traveling on the Jburg to Vic Falls overland (DLLJ), and it lists this at $95 USD, however on the reversed itnerary (Vic Falls to Jburg) it is listed at $40. Is there a reason for the major price diffrence?

What would the estimated cost of transport to/from airport be independently? I thought i read in the trip "Before you go" that taxis from the Airport to Hotel in Jburg cost $15.

Also in the case of DLLJ Jburg to Vic Falls overland does the $95 cover pick up in Jburg and drop off in Livingstone?

Thanks in Advance! I am beyond excited about this trip.

The difference would likely be just the difference in price between Joburg and Livingstone...but $95 seems pretty steep to me. That being said, I assume Joburg is a pretty big city, I'm not sure how far the joining hotel is from the airport.

The cost does not include getting you to the airport at the end of your trip...your tour leader will help you arrange this. If you're lucky, others on your trip will be on similar flights and you can split the cost.

If you decide to skip the airport pickup through G Adventures...you might want to take advice from the airport website...

In order to curb illegal touting, ACSA has appointed a concessionary taxi and shuttle service that covers all major towns, suburbs, shopping centres and casinos. Another option is to email the joining hotel and get them to organise your pick-up it may be cheaper as it'll be local prices.

Hi Keith2004,

Thank you for your post and for pointing this out to us. We forwarded your concerns to our local office and have addressed the price difference. This has now been adjusted on our end and the airport arrival transfer prices are as follows:

Pick up airport in Victoria Falls
Cost: $40 USD per person (single)

Pick up airport in Johannesburg
Cost: $55 USD per person (single)

Thanks again for pointing this out to us and giving us the opportunity to correct this.

Kindest regards,
G Adventures

I've noticed on the various trips I've taken with G Adventures that it is worth it to research first. I have two upcoming trips - One to Guatemala and one to Costa Rica. For the Guatemala trip (starting in Antigua) the airport transfer with G is $60 for one person or $40/each for two or more. The going rate on a group shuttle is $10 - 15, and a private shuttle is $35 - $40 for up to 3 people. Needless to say I've booked a private shuttle. (all the transfers are airport to hotel). For the Costa Rica trip, the transfer through G is $25 for one person, $15/person for two or more. The going rate for a taxi into the city is $20 - $25. I've booked with G Adventures as we arrive late evening and having an English speaking driver who knows where to go is a definite asset. On some trips in the past I've taken a taxi, others a privately arranged transfer through the hotel or with G Adventures. The easiest way to ensure a safe transfer is through G Adventures but it may not be the most economical way.

WIth the airport game lodge in joburg, you can ring them when you arrive and they will come and collect you for free. I did not realise this, I had the pick up, the pick up did not show and someone at the information desk called the lodge for me and someone came. In which time the gap representative had come. Next thing Im sat in the car park for an hour as the gap representative had problems with his ticket and they werent letting him out the carpark. All in all I wish I had done the free shuttle.

Keep an eye on the prices. When I put my previous post about airport transfers back in March, the one for San Jose, Costa Rica, for the Costa Rica Kayaking Adventure was $25 for one person or $15 each for 2 or more. Today, when I was checking to see how many people had booked the trip I noticed that the pickup is now $55 for one person or $30 each for 2 or more. Seems a bit excessive an increase to me when others have commented that a taxi is between $20 and $30! Yes, the starting hotel changed but the new one is only about 5 blocks from the original one.
