DUEA Starting time discrepency in 'Trip Details'

Postby rrjz » Sat Jan 14, 2012 9:38 am

Hi
I am not sure if I am posting this in the correct area but I have a question about the start time of this trip on January 23. The trip details has two different start times and its about a two hour difference.

"Day 1-2 Kampala to Queen Elizabeth National Park (B,2L,2D)
Approximate Distance: 431 km
Estimated Travel Time: 9 hrs The journey begins early in the morning (6am) as we travel...."

and then further down under Joining Instructions

"Joining Instructions
This tour begins at 8:00am on the morning of Day 1 at the joining hotel above. Please be on time to meet your driver/guide at the front entrance of the hotel."

Is it a better idea to call in to find out the correct start time? Or does somebody here know the correct start time for this tour? I really don't want to miss the bus on the first day. There is no meeting the night before so I can't find out once I arrive. I need to know prior to leaving on the trip.

Thanks
Ryan

You're better off contacting G Adventures directly to confirm the timings and of the discrepancy on the site:

Ok - I was thinking that would be better but thought I would try this way. I am waiting for them to call me back on another matter so I will bring this up to them then.

I take this to mean that on day 2 you will be leaving at 6am.

"Day 1-2 Kampala to Queen Elizabeth National Park (B,2L,2D)
Approximate Distance: 431 km
Estimated Travel Time: 9 hrs The journey begins early in the morning (6am) as we travel...."

Yeah - that is confusing. However you will be arriving at your hotel the night before and there will be joining instructions left at the reception desk (a sheet often stuck on the wall) for what you have to do and what time. Sometimes the group meeting is the night before also.
But yes do double check with G.

Hi ya,,
I'm doing the same trip in July...
My stuff says a 6am start...although hopefully they have phoned you back by now & confirmed your particular start time.
Have you got travel Visa's or are you going to get them on arrival? I'm still dithering on that!
Have a fab adventure - would love to hear about it when you return...
Enjoy!

Thanks everyone for the replies. When I talked to them they said that the tour leader should be onsite and that I can talk to him or her about the start time.

@Sarah- I am going to get my Visas while I am there. Everything I have read and anyone that I have asked has said its easy to do at the borders. I am not sure if its true or not but I have heard the Visas cost more if we get them prior to leaving. I will definitely let you know how it goes at the borders and how the trip goes.
Don't underestimate the packing - I did - I just about don't have room for my clothes. Sleeping bags take up alot of room! lol

Just a couple more days until lift off! I am getting very excited!

hi just got back from this particular trip,There is a notice board inside the reception area at Red Chilli giving you details of the trip.we had a meeting the night before with the guide at about 8pm.
we did leave red chilli at 6am, we then went to a supermarket to buy supplies for the trip. you can stock up on water & a few things to nibble on the drive, i also bought some laundry powder to do some washing along the way.
I got my visa at the airport at Entebbe $50USD easy as, when you get off the plane grab an arrival form & find the line that says visas. fill the form in while you are in the line. You can get a taxi just outside the arrivals hall, cost me $30usd to red chilli. I had visas for Kenya & Tanzania, but other people on the trip got theirs at the border no problems.

hope this helps

Hi ya..
Hope I havent missed you...But I think you travel today?? Bon Voyage!!
I'm sooo excited for you...Safe trip!
:P yep - Im definately getting Visa's on arrival - seems to be the way to go, thanks.

markmol - dont suppose you remember how much cash you took with you,or approx how
much you spent? Know it's all relative, but at least the backpack will cut down on the amount of tourist tat i can actually bring back haha i am such a sucker for tat on holiday! Thinking more about the excursions offered and the tipping really?
What was your best moment or memory from your adventure? would you do another one? :)

Hi Sarah,
Spending money is tricky, i don't buy much tat, but there will be plenty of places for you to do that. A couple of camp grounds you can upgrade from your tent to a cabin for around $10 a night. If you like a beer after a long day it costs about $2. There is a cruise on the Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth park which is $15, 2 great hours of game viewing. At Lake Bunyonyi there is a few cheap walks you can do, also here the Gap CEO organised a guy who made up t shirts for $20. you get a choice of what you want to be printed on it. At Lake Mburo i did a sunset cruise which was $12, pleanty of Hippos, birds & monkeys. In Jinga there are plenty of options, white water rafting $130, bungy jumping $85. In Nairobi I went to the Giraffe Centre $11, The Carnivore Restaurant $35 for a set meal. When you go to the Serengeti there are no shops so if you want to have a drink with your evening meal you have to take it with you. They will stop at Asurha where you can buy spirits quite cheaply, a few of the girls bought some wine, remember to take a bottle opener. In Zanzibar you only get breakfast, there is a night market, the food is cooked while you wait & is quite cheap. When you go to the north of the island we did a snorkling trip all day including lunch $30.
tipping is up to you, you will have 3 gap crews from Kampala to Nairobi there is a CEO, A cook & a driver. from Nairobi to Zanzibar you will have a CEO & a driver, in the Serengeti you will have a guide. we had an envelope which we passed around, i worked on $5 a day
The highlights for me were the gorillas, the trek was quite hard but we got to within 3 feet of the group, the Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater were amazing & the laid back life of Zanzibar.
The long days on the truck can be quite hard but that is the price you pay to get to these places.
i am alredy planning my next trip maybe from Joburg to Zanzibar
you will have a blast
Mark

Hi Mark,
Thank you for taking the time to answer my query..
That was really helpful and gave me an idea on what sort of budget to work on, and it was handy to know what the upgrade costs were - incase i fancy a night of luxury in a cabin - never camped before apart from 2 nights at Glastonbury years ago which was a disaster haha so I knew the option was there but it was nice to get your feedback on everything as you found it..thanks.
It will be my birthday on day 7 of the tour and i will be at Lake Mburo - so will definately be doing the sunset cruise now that you have mentioned it. Yeh can't wait to see the Gorilla's and Serengeti - and will look forward to the snorkelling in Zanzibar!
Im hoping to do an adventure to Middle East next - hopefully next year when things have settled down a bit eh...
Your a star Mark - thanks again for your input - Happy Travels...
