Currency and kit for Patagonia Dreaming

Postby sarahoneill » Tue Jan 03, 2012 10:35 am

Hi

Can you let me know your thoughts on the following please for the above trip next month?

- What currency do we need? Is it all USD or do we need local currencies as well for Argentina and Chile?

- Are there places to change travellers cheques etc or many ATMs? I'd just rather not carry more cash than we need to!

- Can we pay for optional excursions by credit card or do they have to be cash? Again what currency is needed if we need to pay cash as most are quoted in USD but I'm not sure if that's just for ease.....

- It says on the kit list ' sports sandals' - are these just as a leisure item or are there points where we will need to wear them rather than our walking boots for example? For wading possibly?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Most optional excursions are paid for in cash. But you can discus this with your CEO at your welcome meeting.

Travelers Cheques are a lot less popular with the proliferation of ATM's in all but the smallest towns you should be able to take out money as you need. Again your guide can let you know if you need to take out money if there will not be an ATM available for a few days.

USD is quoted just to give travellers an indication of costs but local currency is always used. As stated, traveller's cheques are a no go and you will find it very difficult to exchange and that too not just in South America.

Sports sandals is more for leisure which can be worn at camp or around town but you will need good boots for the 'W'route. It's a great trip.
