traveler chqs in india
Hi
I will be travelling in the Spirit of India tour next month and want to know the best way to change money during the tour - ATM or travellers cheques? I did one of your tours in south india and finding places to exchange travellers cheques was not always easy, I did not try using ATMs. Based on where the trip will be visiting what would you suggesr?
Thankyou

Hi there, I would recommend cash and card(s) to take. Travellers cheques are dying if not have died a death and very very few places will exchange these...going to a bank etc can be quite a long process and especially in India.
Your guide will be able to tell you where you can exchange and/or withdraw money through the trip so just ask at your introduction meeting.

Hi
ATMs seem to be everywhere, even in the smaller towns of India. Just watch the fees involved in withdrawing, take out what you think you'll need for several days rather than $20 each time you use it.

Travellers cheques are so last century - no where uses them any more - do they?
ATM or the ever popular travel cards are the way to go these days.

Thankyou for the responses, it was much as I expected. I wonder why the tour detailsstill recommend that we take travellers cheques.

They are becoming more of an insurance policy if your cards stop working.
Then you still have some money available to you, albeit some what of a pain to cash.

Considering my friend just prior to retiring, signed off his company contract with Banks of India to emplace 2,000 ATMs per year, open ended contract, if there isn't an ATM where you're going now, there very soon will be. India is striding ahead in all forms of technology.
