'W' trek + ferry- Essential patagonia tour

Postby felicitydouglas » Mon Sep 12, 2011 11:29 pm

Hi,

I was wondering if i could get more information about the 'W' trek, and also the ferry aspect of this tour. I'm booked into the October 11 tour so I just want to try and get a big more organised about everything ebfore we leave for Chile!

With the ferry, what are the facilities like on board?
When i got the brouchure it said that meals were included, but it looks like this has now been updated, and meals are no longer included...
Is there a cafe or restaurant onboard?
Or should we bring our own food and drinks etc?
I assume we are on the Navimag, and from what I can tell, this means cabins with 4 bunk beds, and no bathrooms?

With the "W' trek, we are camping from the itinerary
Are we required to bring a tent? are they supplied? do we ahve to carry them in our day pack somehow? Are the 1-man or 2-man tents?
What about food and water and snack etc for the 4 days- do we have to carry everything? Do we need stoves etc? If we are going to be carrying all of this equipment should we not worry abotu a day pack, and instead use a normal sized 60-80l pack for the walk instead?

Thanks!!!

Hi Felicity,
Forgive me if you've already found some of the answers you're looking for, but I can't help but offer you a little information...

As far as the camping goes, I hiked lares trail in Peru with GAP earlier this year. While hiking, GAP provied all the tents (three person tents, two people per tent) and all the food - and the food was the best food I've eaten on a vacation in my entire life. We rented sleeping bags and hiking poles for about $5-15 USD, I can't remember exactly. You only cary a day pack while hiking - only your extra layers of cloththing, water, snacks, camera ect. Porters carry the rest of your things - sleeping bag, change of clothes, anthing you don't think you'll need during the day while hiking. But you must keep this to minimum because it the porters are people and they also carry our tents, food, cooking suplies, and everything else.

Where did you get the information that we are with Navimag while on the ferry? I'm curius to look up more information about this.

Can't wait for this trip to start!
Happy planning,
Katy

Hi Katy,

So I emailed Gap in Australia, we are on the Navimag ferry- in a 42 berth (bunks) cabin!!!
I asked if we are able to pay the difference to upgrade to a 4-berth but they said "not possible".
Helpful!

For the W walk, porters carry 6kg of gear- and we only need day packs apparently, so I assume we don't carry our own tents or cooking equipment...
