Where to go in August

Postby tetraquark » Tue Jun 19, 2007 3:49 pm

Hi,

So I was looking to do some 2-3 weeks of interesting travel this summer before starting graduate school - but have run across the problem that August doesn't seem like a very good time to travel. Thailand was my first thought, but the climate in late summer seems to be extremely hot and humid. Specifically - weather in most places seems to be either atrociously hot/humid, rainy, or (in the deep southern hemisphere) very cold. What trips would be recommended for August (given that I generally prefer fairly mild weather, but that I'm in pretty decent shape, and would definitely be down for some fairly serious hiking).

My early research suggests parts of South America might be good in August - is this true?

I'm a 22 year old American, and I'd be traveling alone. This would be my first trip with GAP (or with any organized group, for that matter). I was looking for something a bit more exotic than North America and Europe (both of which I've already traveled in some depth).

Peru should have good weather in August, I imagine Columbia, Bolivia and other countries in that area would also be okay.

from what i understand, africa can be a great trip at any time of year but the temp in august in kenya/tanzania is, to african standards i guess, cool and dry. i've seen that the highs are around 25-30C and lows around 10-15C.. being canadian, these are similar temps here in aug so it would even out

August travel

South Africa, Botswana, Zambia are all great places during Aug. We were there last year and it was great - no rain - around 20-25 C during the day. Cape of Good Hope great place to hike around.

Best place we've ever been in Aug for moderate temps and lots of hiking, climbing and walking was Iceland. Youth hostel in the capital has great services, always crowded with people hiking, biking, driving around the island. We climbed glaciers, grassy, warm hills and, on the same day, hit the beaches and the hot springs. It was great!

Bhutan is another awesome, moderate temperature location but you have to apply for permission to go well in advance - it is spectacular and worth all the paperwork!

Hope this helps you decide - we are doing Kenya and Zambia this Aug.
