Optional Activities

Postby yfstafford » Thu Nov 25, 2010 7:10 pm

Do optional activities need to be paid for and arranged in advance or will we need to do this along the way? I know that most are operated by third parties but was just wondering whether Gap directly organized with them or not.

They do not need to be paid in advance. Your guide will help arrange activities along the way. If there is something special you'd like to do please tell your guide sooner rather than later.

Have a great trip!

The only optional activity I know of that may need to be paid in advance is a hot-air balloon ride...I don't know if it's just Serengeti or on other trips as well (Egypt etc.). Everything else is usually just paid when you do it.

I heard mentions (don't remember in which threads) of not having pre-paid/registered for some optional activity and having to rush to do so, so just wanted to make sure. Thanks for the info!

It depends on the trip. I'm going to Antarctica and paid for the camping in advance. The kayaking must also be paid in advance if you choose that option.

I have a related question.

If the activities are 'pay as you go' then won't this mean that I may have to carry perhaps thousands of dollars with me for the trips, meals, etc. ATMs may not be very accessible in jungle locations.

I don't like carrying this much money with me - especially when we are cautioned to be careful in this respect.

Will a credit card work for the activities?

I will be on a CRA (Costa Rica) tour this summer.

Thanks

Andy

Hi Andy,

Just got back from CRA in March and I paid most of the optional activities with my credit card (canyoning in La Fortuna, zip lining and hanging bridges in Monteverde). Most companies accept credit cards, just ask before to make sure they don't add an extra transaction fee (the ones listed above didn't).

Hope this helps!
