Uganda gorilla trek with porters?

Postby kierkegaard » Sun Sep 05, 2010 6:10 pm

I am going on the 3-day gorilla trek in Uganda (TDUGTN) towards the end of September, and there is a small detail that's confusing me. I assume that when staying at the same hotel the two nights we can leave most of our luggage there and just bring our daypacks when leaving for the jungle. But in the Trip Details the following is to be read:

"In the morning take a short drive to Park Headquarters and meet with your excellent local guides and porters, who will carry your personal items and assist you during the trek."

Does the workd "porter" imply that we will be needing to bring all our stuff, or is it just to be understood as an assistant to help with any practical problem on the trek?

Sorry if it's a stupid question - I'm going on the Kilimanjaro trek before going to Uganda, and there a "porter" means "someone to carry everything you have except your daypack", so I'm just trying to clear things up. :)

Yes - I can see that this statement is confusing.
The porters are defo not doing the same job as they are on Kili.
The trek is merely a day trek so you leave everything behind except your daypack and needs for the day including packlunch etc.
If your very lucky the gorilla's will be fairly nearby and easy to get to. But usually they will be further away and the guides/porters have to hack through the undergrowth to get anywhere near them - scouts are sent out very early in the AM to find them and radio back. Often it can be wet and very very muddy and slippery, and rainy - so take waterproof's. As its pretty hilly you need to be of at least moderate fitness.
You also have an armed soldier accompanying you due to a guerilla attack on a tourist group a few years ago.
BUT when you finally get to meet the gorilla's, ITS AWESOME!

Awesome, thanks for clearing that up. I'm without a doubt looking forward to it. :)
