Greek Sailing Adventure - Mykonos to Santorini

Postby srderrow » Thu Jun 24, 2010 5:47 pm

Hi everyone...i know these questions have been asked before (some by me) but as I get closer to my trip I'm trying to figure out all the logistics...

I am taking the trip from Mykonos to Santorini in August - can't wait! My flights are such that i have a night in Athens on both ends...in fact, i have an entire day on Saturday (taking the ferry to Mykonos sunday morning).

So - just to confirm - I believe it was suggested to stay in the Plaka area (convenient by metro from airport/to port)? Do you suggest taking the first ferry out in the AM on Sunday to meet up with the boat in Mykonos? What time can we meet up with the boat and put our stuff somewhere...?

My return from Santorini on Sunday...approximately what time should we board the ferry back to Athens? There are a couple of options and I wasnt sure when we'd be docked on Sunday?

Finally - I leave Monday morning from Athens and would like to stay somewhere convenient to the airport (and accessible from the port from when i return on Sunday from Santorini). What part of town would that be? Any hotel/hostel suggestions for this last evening?

P.S....When we are away during the day on the islands...is our stuff secure on the boat?

THANKS!!!

Hi there,

Sounds like a cool trip and hopefully here are some answers which will help your planning:

The joining instructions are stated in the Trip Details:
http://www.gapadventures.com/trips/gree ... s/#Joining Instructions
Sunday at 17:00 is the meet up time so you have some time to get there...taking an earlier boat from Athens will cover you for any delays. Do check the Trip Details a few days before you leave just in case some details change.

Leaving your items/luggage on the boat is perfectly safe...treat it like your home and you have the staff there so you won't have any worries here.

In Athens...the Plaka area is a central and good location to stay. From here most sights are within walking distance. Also, you can take the metro or the bus from the airport into the centre of Athens which has the main square known as Syntagma Square. Check out this post too:

Hope this is a start!

Thanks!
i assume most folks just do carry an actual backpack...since there doesnt seem to be a place to store any luggage in Mykonos between when the ferry arrives and 5pm...?
I do want to stay in Plaka the 1st night, but was hoping to stay more central to the airport on the return since it's really just to sleep. what is the name of that area?
...and do we arrive in Santorini on the last day, or the last evening? trying to figure out what ferry to take back to athens on sunday...

For what it's worth, Dmitri -- who runs the bar/restaurant/hotel which serves as the meeting place in Mykonos -- loves GAPpers and will be more than happy to let you drop off your bags. You probably will not be able to drop your bags off on the boat early.

I would use duffel bags rather than a backpack. The backpacks are bulky and hard to stow on the boat. You will actually get back to Santorini Saturday afternoon so you could even catch an evening ferry back to Athens if you wanted. Otherwise, you have to be packed and off the boat by 8:30 AM so the skipper can get it cleaned and ready for the next crew.
