Diving in the Galapagos

Postby wgardham » Mon May 31, 2010 12:28 pm

I'm going on the Galapagos on a shoestring in August, and I'm wanting to book a dive trip. I'm a certified diver and i'm curious as to what day and what island, would give me the most free time to dive?

Once you arrive your guide can help you arrange that. They will know what days will have the most free time, as well as what companies are reputable.

I hope this helps.

Honestly, you won't have a lot of free time for diving unless you forego some of the scheduled activities. When I went 3 years ago (can't believe it's been that long already!), there were a number of dive companies that anchored in the same locations as the GAP boat. You might be able to join them for a day and hook back up with the GAP boat via Zodiac.

Rather than wait, I'd get your itinerary and e-mail some of the known diving companies there to see if their schedule lines up and if they'd be willing to hook you up that way. Depending on which trip you're taking, Baltra may be your best bet as the boat will be there nearly all day between dropoff and pickup.

What I'd REALLY advise would be to extend your time on the islands by a day or two so you can dive after the boat trip is done then fly back to Quito after you've had surface time. The drawback here, of course, is that you will miss the GAP shuttle back to the joining/departure hotel in Quito but taxis are fairly cheap there. You'll have to talk to GAP about moving your hotel night back to accommodate this but they're usually pretty good at working with you on things like that.
