Mosquito spray

Postby helenahv » Sat Apr 03, 2010 6:18 pm

Hi.
I'm going to Kenya og Zanzibar in June 2010, and of course there are lots of mosquitos. I read somewhere that it was good idea to spray clothes and sleeping bag with mosquito spray to keep them away. My question is: is that nessecery?

Do NOT use a DEET based product on clothes, sleeping bags, etc. It can both stain and break down the fabric.

Instead, use a chemical named Permethrin (.05% strength) on clothes, etc. Various brand names depending on where you live. And, it is only to be used on cloth, not skin.

As to "it is needed" - cheap insurance in mosquito prone areas.

It will also eat the rubber off your binoculars.

You won't need to put it on your sleeping bag regardless of what type you use. You DO need to worry about skeeters (and tsetse flies when in the Serengeti) but 98% DEET on your bare skin is good enough. I used Deep Woods OFF! and Cutter and did just fine except with the tsetse flies (nothing seems to drive them away). Do yourself and your truckmates a favor and use the pump spray style instead of aerosol can -- it packs smaller and people won't have to inhale the vapors.

You don't have to bathe in it -- two or three sprays is pretty much sufficient to cover your arms and legs and another spritz to get your neck and behind the ears will have you good to go. I didn't notice a need for any of it in Zanzibar -- maybe in Stone Town if it has rained recently.

Enjoy yourself -- the only thing you'll regret is that you didn't book to go past Zanzibar. :D

Graybeard said not to use DEET on Clothing, Sleeping Bags etc...it will cause damage to it.

On your skin such as your face, neck etc it is fine.
DO THE RIGHT THING ...all the time, every time!
