question about security of belongings, etc. (Egypt)
I'm heading to Egypt on the Egyptian Archeology Adventure on March 27th, and I have never travelled solo, and I have definitely never been anywhere like Egypt or on a GAP tour (sharing a room with a stranger!) for that matter, so please excuse my ignorance...
Anyway, I always carry my money & passport on me in my money belt, but I am planning to bring my netbook with me (and two cameras) and I'm just wondering how safe it is to leave my computer and/or cameras in my hotel room when I'm out and about. Also, is it safe to assume I don't need to lock my bags when they are in my hotel room, etc.? I just have those crappy zipper locks, nothing fancy like that metal mesh people use over their packs - is it really necessary?
Any tips?!

Use the room- or hotel safe for valuables. I leave my
suitcases unlocked, but all I keep there is clothes.

I just picked up a Pacsafe portable safe. It will hold my DSLR, passport and a few other things. I'll be able to secure it and attach it to a fixture in the hotel room. Worth checking out:
www.pacsafe.com
I picked up mine (last one) at Hiker's Haven (owned I think by Europebound) in Toronto.
Good luck.

For some reason the pacsafe is really hard to find, and I live in a big city! No one has the right size safe in stock.
Anyone have any other suggestions?
In the meantime I will keep looking!

Leave the netbook at home (your on holiday and it can wait!) and keep your cameras with you. I wouldnt recommend leaving anything valuable at all in the hotel room locked or not.

it turns out everything was perfectly safe! I never had a problem with ANYTHING.
Zuleika - you probably won't see this, but I am also heading to Botswana soon-ish, but it's for work! Hopefully I can fit a GAP tour in as well.
