Great info Jeff and helps give greater understanding.
And really good to know that those already booked on YOLO tours have a choice of staying on, or accepting financial incentive to change.

Just got the call from my agent.
I'm confirmed 100% on MMC April 3rd to 17th.
WOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

No one will know I'm 40 anyway, no one beleives I'm over 33 unless I produce ID.

Thank you to CS, Jeff, Mods and everyone else that was involved.

I'll be sure to take as many pics as I can.

Thanks, Jeff. That was a lot more clear. I see your point that dividing by departure date wouldn't work.

Enjoy, Flungmuk!

Excellent news flungmuk....I also checked with my travel agent who called Gap and there is no problems with us doing our tour in March. YAY!!! I just hope my fellow travellers won't be too disappointed about having a couple of "oldies" on their tour.

Creating YOLO was not only to tap into the large demand we had from young travellers for a style of travel for them, but also to ensure the older travellers, who often wanted a more serious tour and were upset by the amount of partying by the younger travellers on their trip, would book and travel on the right tour for them. This is what we mean by getting the right people on the right tour.

There's ways to do this without telling people they're "too old" though. Why not establish trips that are designated for a more mellow, non-partying crowd instead? Or else just use age as a guideline instead of flat-out restricting a 40-year-old from going on a trip. The age range you've chosen is quite wide; I know 18-year-olds who think anyone over 30 is an old fart! And, actually, a 39-year-old is old enough to be the parent of an 18-20-something! I understand the approach GAP is taking, but it seems to have been implemented poorly.

I'm 28 and I don't drink or party...I've travelled with groups of young people who partied all night and it was annoying because I couldn't sleep, and we couldn't ever leave on time in the morning. I wouldn't mind travelling on a tour that is only comprised of college-aged people, but I don't want to book a YOLO tour if it's catered to the party crowd.

Hey - is anyone else concerned that we haven't heard from Flungmuk? He said he was due back on April 17th and that he'd give us a review on the YOLO tour but so far nothing. I think they did him in to silence him!!! We'll never know about the YOLO tours!! OMG!! Now I'm afraid, I think GAP has my home address!

Nice one...I think Flungmuk must've really enjoyed it and is refusing to leave the trip in the knowledge that he won't be able to go on the trip ever again!

Re: Got a letter from GAP about my YOLO trip

Hello,

At 32 years of age I am well within the YOLO age group.

When I was looking for a company to travel with on an extensive tour through Central America I considered 'Central America & Mexico' (JSX) & 'Central American Journey: Cancun to Panama' (CMCP) as I wanted a long trip (these are 46 & 45 days long).
Unfortunately these are both YOLO trips & to get a different age bracket I'd have had to shorten my tour to a maximum of 31 days and therefore see less of Central America. (No I don't want to start mixing & matching tours to make my own longer tour!)

After travelling a lot, using many different tour companies & trip types I have discovered that I enjoy trips far more when they have a much wider age range. My ideal age range is 30 - 65 years, obviously I realise that's not practical & therefore the most common age range is 18-65 (or 70) years.

I do understand the reasoning after reading Jeff Russil's post, I'm just pointing out that Gap is losing more potential customers than "just" the 40+ customers.
Possibly it may have been better to have left the age range alone & to have told people in the trip information that the majority of clients that go on these tours do happen to be in the younger age range & to bear that in mind before booking.

In the end I booked my main tour with another company & I am only doing a 10 day YOLO Galapagos tour with Gap, but only because this is a short "add-on" to my main trip & it is the only way I can fit Galapagos into my budget.
