Just got off the phone with my agent.
Gap said no.
Have to say I am very disapointed.
I'm going to try the trip the sugested.
Just have to figure out flights as I'm booked with Alaska, and they don't fly to Guatemala.

Flung, Sorry to hear about your change of plans. I'm speachless and wordless, almost. I think it's interesting that I haven't come across any pro-yolo threads though... Al

Hello,
I'm very sorry to hear about this decision on GAPs behalf. I agree with the post below..

f wrote:Hi,
I am 28 so squarely in the YOLO bracket... Have never been on a GAP tour before and actually chose them for my first trip specifically because their tours seemed to include a wide range of ages. Im doing the europe thing and not interested in spending it hung over everyday (though im only going on what i have heard about other tours that cater to 18-39's!) I was looking forward to a tour that had 18 year olds to 60year olds + who would each enrich my trip in different ways. Anyway, long story short, the particular tour i really was keen to do happened to be a YOLO trip - so that is what i did end up booking. But to all the TDO's out there, just want to say that would have much prefered my trip included you!
Cheers,
F.

As a young individual who booked a tour before the YOLO designation was established, I was very disappointed to hear that my tour had become a YOLO tour. I had chosen the tour specifically because it included such a wide age range, and had the potential to included some very experienced (and older) travelers - they have the best stories!! I don't think it's fair to discriminate on the bases of age. If I had wanted such a tour, I would have picked a different company that catered to drunken teenagers.
I hope that the tour you ended up picking turns out to be fantastic!
Best of wishes,
- Sam

Hmmm...I have a similar problem. Have not been contacted by GAP yet, but have booked to go on the Northern Hilltribes and Villages Tour in 6 weeks. When I booked this last year it was listed as a classic trip style and there was no problems with us being 14 yrs, 17 yrs, 45 yrs and 52 yrs of age. Since then it has changed to YOLO. (I thought age discrimination was limited to Contiki Tours) We are all very fit and perfectly able to cope with the Physical demands of hiking etc. What is to happen now? All our flights are booked, teenagers are actually excited and I'll be really p****d if we get to Thailand and then are told we aren't eligible to participate in this tour.

Rebecca, I've forwarded this thread again to Customer service. I would like you to know where you stand sooner vs. later. I've done Thailand with gap a few years back and loved it, I wish the same to you guys as well.

Postby jeff.russill » Mon Jan 25, 2010 11:13 am

My name is Jeff Russill and I am the Director of Product and Operations for Gap Adventures.

I’d like to take a few minutes to respond to this thread about YOLO.

The YOLO brand was created based wholly on feedback from passengers on the specific tours that ended up becoming YOLO tours. Feedback from those older, and younger than 39 is what drove us to change these trips to YOLO. But most importantly it was the older travellers who were almost unanimous in their feelings that they couldn’t enjoy their tour, as they were not in the company of travellers with the same interests, and felt alienated by the group based on what they wanted to do during the day and in the evenings. Even before we changed the trips to YOLO, the vast majority of passengers were under the age of 39.

Creating YOLO was not only to tap into the large demand we had from young travellers for a style of travel for them, but also to ensure the older travellers, who often wanted a more serious tour and were upset by the amount of partying by the younger travellers on their trip, would book and travel on the right tour for them. This is what we mean by getting the right people on the right tour.

Please understand our intention was not to hurt or alienate anyone. In fact it was the opposite….We created YOLO based on the feedback from our customers of all ages who were taking these tours. In fact feedback from our older travellers on these trips has often been that we put age guidelines on our tours so people will know which ones to book on.

Unfortunately there is transition period where a few prebooked passengers outside the YOLO age range on those forward departures. As such we sent a notification to those passengers. The purpose of the notification was to advise passengers that their tour had recently been designated to operate as a YOLO tour, and that they would likely be in a different age demographic than the other travellers. With this, we offered alternatives such as moving to another tour (with financial incentive to do so), or to stay on the existing tour as booked. Unfortunately it seems this communication upset some people, and for that we apologize.

To provide some perspective on this matter, targeted travel is very common and accepted in the travel industry. Companies like Contiki have been doing this for many years, and there are many 40+, 50+ and seniors only resorts and tour companies. Some cruise companies only allow travellers over the age of 25. All of them are responding to market demands from people who want to travel with people their own age. As well there are many other examples of travel restricted to specific groups of people. Women only, couples only, and singles only tours and resorts have become very popular in the last ten years. As well gay and lesbian only tours are a very quickly growing segment of the travel industry. There are countless examples of all of these in the marketplace.

The big difference between Gap Adventures and these other companies is that the other 90% of our tours are not restrictive in any way - meaning we do have a Gap Adventure for everyone. Our Active, Classic, Expedition, Independent, Limited Edition, Overland and Volunteer tours are open to all.

A misconception that I have read in these threads, and which I apologize for us not being clearer on, is that YOLO is tailored towards young people because of the physical demands of the tour. This could not be further from the truth. In fact none of our more adventurous or physically demanding tours are YOLO tours, and remain under our Active trip style.

A suggestion that has come up and that I would like to respond to is that we consider YOLO specific departures, as opposed to entire tour programs. We did consider this. However when looking at the passengers who have booked on these tours in the past, 99% were in the YOLO age bracket. Unfortunately this means there would not be sufficient demand for the tours from people over the YOLO age to be able to operate them effectively.

As I’ve said above, our goal was to create a new trip style to fit our clients needs and wants after listening to them. Our philosophy is always to listen to our clients. It’s a philosophy that has helped make us the most popular adventure company in the world, and one that we will continue to believe in. However it seems this time that we have maybe not done the best job at delivering on the transition of some tours to YOLO, and for that I apologize.

I do hope you will still consider travelling with Gap Adventures, and choosing one of the other 800 tours we have available.

Any questions and concerns can be directed to our customer service department and I know they will do their best to make things right.

Thanks for the post Jeff,

Unfortunaly, my email from GAP...
"We hope we provided a suitable alternative for your needs and have your understanding on why you cannot travel on your originally intended tour."
And a phone call from a supervisor to my travel agent all say I don't have this option to stay on my tour.

My bigest concern is not the proposed tour (cmtm), it does cover some of the things I really wanted to see, but that fact it ends in Antigua, Guatemala. My flights are already booked with Alaska and they don't fly to Guatemala.

I would happily give up the 25% discount and anything else to stay on MMC trip, even as the token old guy (although I am 40 years young, not old :) ).

Thanks for all the posts guys.
Here's to a happy ending,
Scott.

Hey Flungmuk

Sorry to hear about your trip. I did the MMC – Mexico Ancient Civilizations trip 7 yrs back (when I was 40!) and it was very good trip. You're definitely right, it's more of a culture and ruins-based trip than adventure so I don't understand the 'YOLO' designation either.

At the time, there were three guys, each over 40 (one was 55) and two women in the late 50's, and the rest were 20-somethings. For us guys (2 Ozzies + 1 CDN), between the beer, Tequila and local Palenque 'mushrooms'...it was the 20-somethings that were banging on our door at 2:00 am telling us to shut-up...okay, that's a lie...they joined in and we all had a great time! :D

Point is, with a YOLO trip...it'll be their loss...

Cheers

To all who have expressed concerns with the notification and the reference of not been allowed to remain on the tour. I apologize for the upset this appears to have caused. We are listening to our clients, and we thank you for your feedback.

**Please note, all travellers who are currently booked on a YOLO tour and are outside the 18-39 demographic will have the option of remaining on tour as intended**

earth2a - your SPPS tour (Peru on a Shoestring) is in our 'Classic' trip style. Not YOLO. We have no intention of changing this at this stage.
