Containing Upcoming Trip Excitement

Postby jmclatchie » Tue Jan 05, 2010 12:23 pm

I'm heading to Ecuador in February. My trip includes the mainland and the Galapagos. I'm so excited that I can't stop thinking about the trip. I'm reading guide books, pouring over maps, reviewing my flights, thinking of the local people I hope to meet.
I realize that many people in my life aren't travellers. They really don't care that I'm going on a trip, nor do they care where I'm going. I try not to talk about my upcoming trip with them because when I do, their eye glaze over and they change the subject. But I feel that my excitement is going to bubble over!
How do you all deal with your excitement vs. all the people you deal with that really don't care?

I usually chain them to a chair and do a slide show of the sights I'll be encountering. I find that they tend to become enthusiastic pretty quick! :D

Hi
I know what you mean. A typical reaction from non-travellers seems to be "What do you want to go THERE for?" Thank goodness my family are all avid travellers and we spend hours talking about previous trips and upcoming trips. My parents are on a ship headed for Ecuador, my daughter is in Peru, my brother and sister-in-law go to Thailand in May and I'm off to Borneo in July.

At least you have like-minded people on this forum to talk to. :)

If you think you're talking too much now then wait till you get back from your exciting trip! You won't want to stop ;o)

Luckily I have a handful of friends who are happy to listen to my tales and of the trips I'm planning...they are so used to me going off to different places now that it's common for them to ask "so where are you off to next?".

...and hey don't contain you're excitement, spill it out here. We're all happy to listen and any questions then just drop a post.

You'll love Ecuador and the Galapagos...I know I did.

Happy Travels!

Re: Containing Upcoming Trip Excitement - a happy update

My trip ended in early March. It was a trip of a lifetime -- I won't get back to the Galapagos Islands, I'm sure. So I took a lot of pictures: about 5,000. Whew.
It took me a while to review them, delete some, tweak others, cull good photos down to great photos (or good photos that support a great story) and finally make a slideshow. I presented 180 photos on the weekend to people who were genuinely interested. They cared, like me, about different cultures, different animals and plants, history from another part of the world, travel woes and surprises.
I had a lot of fun showing my pictures and telling my stories. I got to relive part of the trip and, from their questions, see the trip through different eyes.
So, I won't be bothered by the blank faces of my coworkers and acquaintances before trips. Before my next trip, I'll think about sharing my stories with people that care and how much fun it is for them and for me.
