Weight/volume restrictions for luggage on Inca Trail

Postby sally_b » Tue May 01, 2007 8:43 pm

How large are the sacks that we're given to pack our luggage in for the Inca Trail hike? Is there a weight restriction? I'm just trying to figure out how much clothing I can fit in there in addition to my sleeping bag.

Thanks,
Sally

Hi Sally,
I'm not sure how big the bags are that we are given (i haven't been on my trip yet) but i do know that the weight restriction is 7kgs!
Hope you have a good time.

Basically, you'll be given a small duffle bag to pack your stuff in for the trail, sleeping bag included. You won't have much room, so it's not likely you'll be able to exceed the limit. You'll have room for the necessitites, but not much else.

hey,
when I went, they weighed our luggage carefully before we left Cuzco, so there was no possibility of overpacking (if you see the work the porters do every day, you would probably carry 1/2 the stuff you'd normally want, just out of respect!)
happy trails,

I just returned from the Inca Trail, so here's the latest update. Duffel bag maximum is 6kg. If you rent the sleeping bag or pad, there is no extra weight allowance - your maximum is still 6kg (tip: the mummy sleeping bag we got from GAP was 2kg; your guide will reconfirm this the night s/he hands out the duffel bags). I struggled a little with getting my bag within the limit but was able to manage after removing extra pairs of socks and underwear I wanted to bring just in case (such a small item can weigh a lot!).

They officially weigh your duffel bag the morning you're dropped off and getting ready to start the trail. There were one or two people surprised when the porter said their duffel bag was overweight, so they had to move items into their daypack on the spot. Be mindful of the weighing scale they give you at the hotel the night before; plan to pack just under the 6kg limit, just in case.

Really - you only need one change of clothes in addition to what your wearing, wear each set 2 days. Maybe 1 spare T if your a sweaty person! Underwear for each day of course. Carry your jumper/fleece and rain gear in your daysack as you'll likely need it in any case. Impulse (body spray) is a good idea to hide a multitude of smells  Take Wet wipes, dont bother with any washing gear, the showers are minging anyway, just wait till you get to Agias Caliente to wash properly. You barely need the 6kg allowance.

Just curious , It looks like your link here talks about the weight that the duffel bag I think its down to 6Kg ,Is that what the Porter carry?? this may sound stupid, but is there a limit to what a Person can carry themselves , I have a bit of camera gear and I just thought I would Check

That weight if of the duffle bag the porters will carry...

You will carry your daypack with everything you need during the day while hiking...jacket, water, rain gear, camera gear. You can put what you want in your own pack as long as you're willing to carry it, but generally lighter is better.

The porters usually carry four duffel bags each so any over-weight is compounded. They are amazing! You'll see how incredible it is when you are struggling with your daypack and the altitude and they run past carrying loads like these! It's true you need very little with you. 6kgs is more than enough.
