Australian bushfires and Planeterra appeal

Postby jimshu » Thu Feb 12, 2009 6:10 pm

I'm sure our members are aware of the disastrous bushfires raging there at the moment
Personally, I did not wish to raise this on the forum, finding the human and wildlife cost too tragic to talk about.
But we were about to make a donation, to the Red Cross appeal, when I read my latest GAP newsletter.
GAP's Planeterra Foundation offers to match every dollar given. So we've just taken that offer on.Let's boost that fund !

As travellers here, we are all interested in the environment, and people we meet around the world. So I'm sure you're deeply concerned with this tragedy.Australia's worst peacetime disaster.

But in the midst of the tragic stories, there is always a few brighter ones that that are worth sharing.
This is soooo lovely :) read the story & then watch the link below. Made me want to cry!

Imagine the suffering of that wild creature, to be able to accept that water from a human hand .

Hey Jim, glad you posted this. I was thinking about making a donation but wasn't sure where to go. Just finished making my donation!

Nice to see Planetera matching dollar for dollar.

To be honest I have a hard time watching videos of any animals suffering but I did see the Koala video aleady. It's all over the news and internet. Hard to miss.

Hey that is a great "match" - unlike the bad matches that may have been used to start a couple of the fires.

Some of my most treasured bushwalking spots are now ash. My cousins live with a few kilometres of where one of the fires was. And, if he had not died of cancer, my husband and I would have purchased a property in the Kinglake area about 6 years ago and would have been ready to retire there this year. So both literally and metophoricaly this has been all too close to "home".

by the way that Koala drinking pic was actually taken during backburning n the week before - but it is a priceless image...
