Antarctica Pictures (lots) + Review

Here are some pictures from my trip. A few crew pictures too.
The trip was amazing and was worth everything.
The ship,food and service was MUCH luxurious than I anticipated.
Internet was about $20 for 10mb or 50 for 35mb of data. 35mb It was enough to answer emails from my clients as well as post updates and a few pictures every couple of days on Facebook.
Tea,water,coffee,hot chocolate and cookies were available 24/7. Other drinks were at charge,but not too expensive.(Never used those,but I think $2 for coke and $3-4 for beer).
There wasn't much free time on the ship as there was always something happening(landings,meals, presentations,etc).
Each cabin had a window and a washroom. Tap water was safe to drink.
I did go swimming twice there. Once at Neko Harbor and another time at the Deception Island. Cold,but worth it
Negative: Well, the air in *some* cabins was not very clean. I think fumes from the exhaust were entering the air conditioning system some how and many cabins were affected. When you are at the Drake and nauseous, the gas smell didn't help at all... It wasn't THAT bad though.

Most are from Antarctica,but a few from Ushuaia and the area.

Love the colorations on your pictures. Did you use a special filter program to enhance them?

Great shots of the penguins porpoising -- I tried like the dickens to get some like that -- and the shot of the shag coming out of the water was amazing.

I want to go back again ... :/

Dimitri, I have been back here a few times now, looking at all your pictures... each time I have been floored by these images and I just could not find the right words to describe them! These shots are nothing less than phenomenal... breath-taking... inspirational... and those are all under-statements! I'm with Derek on all the colours! Fantastic stuff! Most importantly, thank you so very much for sharing! I can only hope I'll do half as good with my camera when I'm out there.
Wondering which camera mount and lenses you used...

I didn't use any filters to enhance them. Most pictures had a simple contrast,curves and sharpness adjustment in photoshop,but a few had saturation adjustments as well.

I used 2 Canon 5DII cameras plus these lenses:

70-200L 2.8IS
Sigma 50-500IS
Canon 24L 1.4

A lens such as 24-135 would be an ideal for most people, as all the action is right in front of you! Penguins are just within 6-10 feet from you. Birds tend to be a bit further away though and 300-500mm range would be ideal.

I am off to Antartica in Feb.11 and just found this site. Looking at your photos has now made me so excited to get there. Almost taken away my fear of the Drake Passage!!! I hope we are able to capture some images at least half as good as yours!

Thanks for the info on your camera kit, too. I'm going to Antarctica in December this year, and was beginning to wonder what kit to take.

We had phenomenal pictures from people with a variety of cameras so you don't have to have an ultra-expensive camera or lens. What you DO have to do is take enough memory cards that you feel no hesitation in taking all kinds of pictures so you can sort them out later. I have about 400 "favorites" out of 3600 -- in fact, I need to finish putting up the links to my "favorites" on my travelog (http://gadget-travels.net/travelog but the complete set is up at http://gadget-travels.net/photos. I opted not to process my pictures the way Dmitri did but I may experiment with that later as I love the effects he achieved.

I'd say there were over half a dozen of us on the Nov trip that had Canons with the 100-400mm L-series lens. It was a nice overall lens but I generally used the Tamron 18-270mm as my all-purpose lens. A large number of the penguin/seal shots are very close range.
