Vietnam: June weather plus what to wear (as a girl)

Ancient temples swallowed by the jungle, rice paddies, local markets, stunning beaches, fiery cuisine, smoking incense at the feet of a golden Buddha, and the friendliest locals around.

Vietnam: June weather plus what to wear (as a girl)

Hey, travelling next month, June. How warm will it be and how much rain should I expect? What clothing should I take and what is appropriate to wear both culturally and to not stand out as an obvious tourist? Thanks, Amy

It will be hot and wet. You will be an obvious tourist whether you like it or not. Wear modest light weight clothing. Vietnam is awesome

Thanks for your reply. Are tank tops / singlets ok? Are shorts ok to wear?

Shorts that are not skimpy are ok, tank tops that are not too tight are fine also. If you visit religious sites your shoulders arms and legs must be covered.

I found Vietnamese women quite modest in their dress...even though it was hot and humid, some of them were wearing full-on sweaters and jeans. I don't recall seeing any that were scantily clad...something to keep in mind.

When I was there people on the tour dressed fairly casual. I would stay away from anything super short or super revealing...but you probably wouldn't be wearing that on a tour anyway. At some of the temples we were warned in advance to bring a cardigan or shawl to cover our shoulders.

I think the Vietnamese are kind of sensitive about bare shoulders, even if they'll never say it to your face. I drew a design for a local woman I met and she jumped on the bare shoulders part of the design, requesting the addition of sleeves.

Given the intensity of the sunshine, covering up's a pretty good idea anyway. In my case, that's going to include a headscarf, because I do not have SPF15 hair any more.
