Checked bags or only carry-on?

Postby IncaTrail50 » Sat Sep 11, 2010 1:07 pm

Just a little random poll for interest's sake. How many of you travel with only carry-on baggage and what's the longest trip you've managed with only carry-on?
My husband and I just went on a two-week trip with only carry-on, a first for us. We usually check at least one bag. This was two pieces of carry-on, though. We each had a backpack and a small carry-on suitcase. Picking up checked bags at Toronto airport can add an extra 45 minutes to an hour to the end of a flight. We felt like guilty school kids sprinting past the baggage carousel to exit the airport! What's your experience?

I've always checked-in one backpack and have one carry-on...I would have problems minimizing my toiletries !

I usually check luggage. The only time I do carry-on only is when I'm traveling on business for a short (3-4 days) duration. I've really rarely had problems with checked bags but am fully prepared to hit stores for replacements if I have to on the other side.

I try do everything possible to try do carry on only.... but lately airline rules and security rules are making that more and more difficult to do with all the restrictions as to what you can/can't take in the cabin.

I have too much stuff that wouldn't be allowed in carry on, toiletries, tweezers, hiking pole, penknife, bottle/cork screw
etc etc

I prefer to check bags when possible, though will use a carry-on only if the trip is only 3-4 days. As a frequent business traveler, I find I am the exception rather than the rule, as most business travelers I see are strictly carry-on travelers to save time, and they tote it like a badge of honor (see: "Up in the Air"). But I find it less stressful to put the onus on the airline, and not have to fight for overhead space. Sure, I've had bags lost from time to time, but they always come back! Except for one time when I spent 3 days working in a cheese factory in Missouri in the same clothes...

Also, since I'm usually carrying a laptop that I put in the overhead bin (I'm tall and can't reasonably put things underneath the seat in front of me and still be comfortable), I don't like taking up another slot with luggage.

Cake....

And, since it was a cheese factory, nobody ever noticed the "ripeness" of the clothes.

Two weeks for just carry on. OK I've only done it once, when I didn't have to carry towels and sleeping kit, but the only time I need 30Kg is when I'm away for 6 months!!
