Most annoying traveller habits?

Postby travellergem » Tue Mar 02, 2010 8:52 am

I've had my food eaten, my stories topped and my next destination given the thumbs down... These are just a few of the really annoying habits of some travellers I've encountered over the years. I love travelling and part of the fun is of course meeting fellow travellers but sometimes they make me want to scream!!

What does everyone else think? What's the most annoying habit you've come across (that you would obviously NEVER do yourself!!!)?

Hmm..well how about last summer on my trip to East Africa. We spent the night at a permanent tented camp by the Masai Mara. During the night, inbetween the roars of lions and the laughs of Hyenas, all I could hear were the sounds of the couple in the tent next to me having their own wildlife encounter...if you know what I mean. Needless to say I didn't get any sleep that night. The next morning I politely asked the to move to the tents further away if they planned some more night time activities.

Not necessarily something I wouldn't do, but it was certainly annoying

Hmmm, good one. Surely, it has to be those guys who always have to top anyone else's stories with a better/scarier/more extreme story of their own??

So true! Especially the ones that NEVER quit talking. Even when you´re having a spiritual experience on the top of a mountain or watching the most beautiful sunset ever, these people always have a comment/story that takes them (and you) out of the moment. I mean, who really cares what happened in India/Africa/Russia in the past when we´re standing in the Amazon jungle RIGHT NOW looking at amazing electric eels and hearing howler monkeys in the distance?

Well if you're going to have a ''wildlife encounter'' in your tent, you've got to roar like a lion, while she giggles like a hyena, then everyone's happy.Nothing like lying awake in your tent listening to lions roaring.Gee, they sound so close......

I really can't list any instances of annoying travellers.
But there was a Russian lady on our Cosmos trip around Turkey who was travelling with hubby and teen son.All from Chicago. Now we Kiwis had got together with all the Aussie girls, and would meet up each evening for Happy Hour, which generally dragged on ....until all the cheap wine was drunk. And it got to be the thing on the tour. And others could see that our Anzac group were having real fun on tour, and wanted to join in and did.Anyway halfway through, I could see the Lady was really down on us.As if to say, we shouldn't be having so much fun. It's not sophisticated. You could see she was the one to put on airs, and try and let everyone know that we were beneath her.
So I started inviting Ivan to join us.And he really wanted to, because our group by know had grown to include almost the whole bus apart from those 3 and another couple who she had befriended.Even they were looking in our direction.Everyone else was by now, looking forward to our little Happy 3 Hours!
But the very last night she relented and made her appearance....and she had so much fun!
And the teen son and I were chatting, and I asked him what he thought.
His reply-"I have been watching people.I say there are 2 types of people on this bus. There are those people who like to have fun."
After a pause " And there are those who would like to have fun!"
So I guess what I'm illustrating is the annoying habit of not mixing in with your fellow travellers. It can be fun.

Mine is IGNORANT TRAVELLERS...aaaarrrggghhhh!

Classic example was in China on an internal flight (back in 1998). One of the guys in the group was sitting next to me and started looking in the pockets and there was the in-flight magazine and with almost disgust he said 'uh it's in Chinese'...I replied with 'look around I think were in China'. Soooooo irritating...if you want home comforts then stay at home!

I met a woman who's every other sentence began with 'When I was in....' that by the end of tour that was what we all called her 'When I was in' I know we have all travelled a lot and its nice to talk about experiences - when I was in so and so but give me strength. Or may be it was she was just jolly annoying generally!!! LOL
And Jimshu - I d have cocktails with the Anzacs in a heartbeat - try holding me back

Good topic. I am sure there are lots of us who do the '"when I was in", but I know what people mean when it can get too much. If you can't enjoy the place you are in at the moment or allow your fellow travellers to enjoy it, you are telling too many travel stories.

The things that annoy me the most are people who don't stop complaining about the cost of things. You get those people who will complain about the cost of everything single thing they see meanwhile what they are complaining about is way cheaper then if they were to buy it at home. Another thing that annoys me is people who can not be on time for anything. It drives me crazy to be waiting around for people. I think it is just so rude when the same people are always late. On one trip to Vietnam we had a couple who were late the first two mornings of the tour. On the second morning when they got on board we all started clapping they were embarassed and got better at being on time.

I wholeheartedly agree! For example, the guy who was complaining about the call to prayer in Dar-Es-Salaam...during Ramadan, of all times. He said, "This town isn't even primarily Muslim." Um, yes, it most certainly is. Then we get to Zanzibar, and he's walking around during the day, sipping a Coke. A local comes up to him and asks him not to drink or eat in public during the day, since it was Ramadan. The guy walks away and mutters, "I should've told him, Why don't you just become Christian?"

 Made me wonder what he was doing traveling, and on a GAP trip no less.

Haha, this one made me laugh because it sounds exactly like my mother. But she's just so genuinely ethusiastic about sharing past experiences that I don't want to tell her to stop telling stories. And I'm sure I've done it to people as well, so I try to let it slide :)

What annoys me most are people who are rude to wait staff/reception/maids/etc. Sometimes the service is bad, the food took a long time to come out, or the room wasn't exactly to your liking, but there's still a right and a wrong way to talk to people, and a couple of pleases and thank yous (as well as a few deep breaths here and there) will go a long way. You can let somebody know that you were unhappy with the service without being degrading.

The following people take a close second on the annoyance list:
- the guy on the plane who sneezes, coughs, and generally spits on everything, but never once washes his hands
- the guy on the plane who refuses to end his phone call before takeoff until the purser has to threaten to take him off the plane (see also: guy on the plane who immediately calls everyone he knows upon landing, at a volume level they can hear in the tower)
- vomity kid in the bulkhead seat (not really his fault, still annoying, such is life)
- the guy with the enormous should-have-been-checked carry-on that he jams in the first overhead so he can get it just before his foot hits the jetway, which happens to be above your seat, and now its your problem
-the guy who pushes his way from seat 63C when they clearly haven't even opened the door yet
-lets just include everybody else on the plane to save time

And finally, those who find out I'm an American and then proceed to lecture me about the wrongdoings of George W. Bush... dammit, I voted for the other guy! :D

The two traveler habits that annoy me the most are

1) Ignoring the guide's advice or warnings on safety, local cultural restrictions, etc.

2) Drama queens/kings who need to make everything about her/him

And how 'bout those wacked roommates? As I travel solo, I've think I've more than my fair share. To wit:

The roomie who gets up two or three times a night, turns on the lights and LEAVES them on when he gets back from the bathroom.

The person who breaks out a backpacking stove IN THE ROOM to heat water for his morning oatmeal. "Saves money".

The snorer whose volume is so loud that it wakes people up in the room across the hall.

The alcohol abuser who starts up midday and gets louder and more belligerent as the day progress, including arguing with the guide about factual information, etc.

The person who leaves their clothes soaking in the tub and then becomes irate when you remove them to take a shower after waiting several hours for him to return to the room.

The charmer who never shows up to orientation meetings, map sessions, etc. and expects you to fill them in on all the details.

And, finally, a variation on a type already mentioned in previous posts... The "I've had better.....when I was ......." Nothing ever meets their expectations. Whine, whine whine.

The planes I love. Its the passengers I could do without.

But before I give the wrong the impression, I actually do love to travel and meet new people, and you have to take the irritating habits with the good ones. It would be naive of me to think that I don't annoy anyone either. Honestly, the flights are usually where all of the most annoying habits come together for me, but there is no better place to get a glimpse of all walks of life than airports and planes.

I just remembered something else irritating; have you ever been on a tour/trek/safari where tipping is expected, and a guideline is clearly outlined before the trip, and then one or more parties refuses to tip for various reasons, and then you're the one stuck explaining to the recipient why you stiffed them? Yeah, that's happened to me more than once.
