Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand - best way to take money

Postby laurenh91 » Mon Apr 01, 2013 4:53 pm

Hi,
Im doing one of the g adventure tours where i go through vietnam, cambodia and thailand and im wondering what the best way to take money is as they have different currencies. Is it easier to get all the money before i go and have three separate currencies or would a pre paid cash card (or something along those lines) work better? I don't really have a plan for how much i want to spend in each place so maybe even getting money changed while im over there?

Help please! :)

I brought a couple hundred dollars US cash for emergency and used my debit card...ATM's are everywhere.

Hi
I agree with kateyb about taking a bit of cash and using ATMs. Just change some money at your arrival airport so you have some money for taxis/tipping etc for the first few hours.

I did the Cambodia and laos mekong adventure in feb/march. I took a couple hundred US cash and took my debit card and credit cards. My debit cards didn't work in the ATM's in Laos for some reason but i had my CC for back up. Have fun!

In Cambodia and Vietnam the US$ will be readily accepted. I usually save up a ton of single dollar bills for small purchases. Local currency is also accepted readily but I found I got better deal using the dollar. Not a great deal better but marginally. In Thailand use the Thai Bhat.
Cheers
