Dunes, deltas & falls: tips and other info

Hi!

Because this trip is "top seller" I hope I get some answers from people who has done this trip already :) I'm going to participate this in March. Also other people can use this thread to ask questions if want!

So I'm thinking about optional activities. Any recommendations - what activities are absolutely in "must to do-list"? Of course everyone is different and like different things but now I just want some reviews :)

How about those camp sites... This sounds funny and little bit stupid question because I know we're going to be middle of nature BUT is there maybe any wi-fi connections?
I wont bring laptop (ehmm, I don't actually even own one  ) but I'm taking my smart phone with me and thinking is it possible to write my blog from there or not. And maybe share some pictures and so on...

How did you organize your safety issues (belongings) in camp sites? I mean I'm sure there won't be safety boxes in tents
(I read that safety box or something like that will be in truck?)

And how about package issues. I have "not-so-great-backpack" and I'm not sure if I wanna take that with me. I also have this kinda bag: http://www.tatonka.com/Products/Backpac ... ler-M/1993 Would it be ok or do I look stupid without backpack in this kinda trip? 8)

Hope to hear something from people who has been in this trip!

I did this exact trip two years ago in March. Lots of people brought a suitcase, but bring a roomy day pack for the delta part of the trip.

I spent a few days in Cape Town and a few in Livingstone before and after the trip. I did the shark cage diving, Table Mountain, shanty town tours, dune boarding, flight over the delta, lion walk, elephant back safari and helicopter ride over the falls. All were worth it.

A few campgrounds had wifi which was nice.

You store some valuables in the bus in the safety deposit box. I kept some stuff in the bus as well too. Clothes I kept in the tent.

It was such great trip!

Thanks a lot for your answers :) I have pretty good day pack so that part is OK. What did you think about those flights over delta and falls? Which one you prefered? I'm little bit interested in flying over falls but it's expensive. Did you have 15 or 30 minutes flight? I could do that 15 minutes but is it long enough to actually see a lot? Haven't thought about flying over delta so much but sure it sounds also nice!

I'm also staying couple of days before tour in Cape Town. From Livingstone I fly to Johannesburg and have couple of days there. In Cape Town I'm going to do some kinda city tour with main attractions, in Joburg maybe do bicycle tour in city.

I assume that we are driving or doing different things in the daytime but how about those evenings at camp? What did you do and do you have ideas what to bring? Play cards/frisbee or something like that? I'm wondering also how big are those tents. You wrote that you kept your clothes in tent so there must be some space for bags? Or is there?

I have always wanted to ride in a helicopter so that ride was well worth it to me. I went in March and there is a lot of water going over the falls and a lot of mist. You really cant get a great view of them from the ground due to the spray. (Make sure you wrap your camera and other valuables really good-I used zip loc bags-you are going to be soaked from head to toe). It was nice to see the falls from up top as you get a really good perspective on how big they are. You have plenty of time to see the falls, and I think any longer would be pointless.

I loved the flight over the delta (I believe it was one hour long). It was really cool to see lots of animals from the sky. Hard to choose between which one I preferred as they are both very different.

The tents are plenty big for two people and two big backpacks.

At night we swam in the pool when there was one, got some drinks at the bar (most campgrounds had a bar), did our laundry and sat around the camp and talked. Because we were up so early in the morning, there were few late nights.

Hi mistie

I did this trip in2010 .it is a fantastic trip. I did the helicopter over the falls.I did it in august the falls were not at full volume but they were still awesome. You can also do a micro flight over them as well.some days on the truck (its not a bus) are long. Bring plenty reading materia,l cards, ipods.adiary to keep track of all the places you go to. Campsites are good .there is a safe to keep money passport locked in. You can lock your big duffle bag into the truck and use a small pack for when you are around camps tents. WiFi is available.inmost towns we stop at some speeds are sporadic.it depends.

I also did lion walk at the falls. And of course we did the sunset cruise . Lots to see and do on this trip. The walk with the sanbushman was also very good.

Hope this helps.

Thanks again collywobbles and kateyb! Everything sounds so great and I'm getting really excited :D

I have a waterproof camera but I'm not sure if I take that with me. Another camera is better otherwise except in water situations..I can sure put that in waterproof bag when being near waterfalls.

I'm gonna take few books, some writing material, music etc. and I'm also used to long drives. Had few in my last trip with G. I'm also pretty good sleeper

And wow, pool and bar in camp sites. Didn't think there would be :)

yes girl :D

There are some campsites with swmming pools , very much appreciated after a long journey on a hot day . make the most of them . Oh yeah travel light you wont wear half the stuff you bring with you. and if you like you can trade clothes you dont need for souvenirs. A pair of flip flops for showers are a must . you may have to walk a little bit to where the showers are. I used a duffle bag for my trip. much easier to get at clothes and things in the tents than a rucksack. Hope this will help you.

cheers . :)
