Money belt recommendations?

Postby chicagojen » Mon Sep 07, 2009 6:25 pm

Hi!

I'm going to Costa Rica in two weeks for the Costa Rica Quest tour and based on various posts, it sounds like the recommended way to carry money is in a money belt. I'm a smaller woman, and was wondering if anyone has recommendations for particular brands / specific models that work well (fit well, don't cause skin irritation, etc)?

Any advice is much appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
Jen

Eagle creek do good ones - with soft coolmax next to your skin for comfort and quickdry.

Sounds good.If you don't want a waist style one, go for the style that hangs from your neck.
And a tip is to carry a cheap wallet or pocket purse.Use that to have just enough money for each day in it.Potential pickpockets will often observe people to see where they access their money from and so you really don't want to show them you getting money out of your money belt.A few dollars screwed up in your pocket for the day, or in your wallet and they'll figure you're not worth the effort.
Keep safe and enjoy.

Thank you! I decided to purchase a money belt from Eagle Creek after reading a number of reviews online. For days when I may need a purse (due to lack of effective pockets), I'll be sure to bring one of my smaller basic purses to not attract attention.

Thanks!

A friend who is a runner introduced me to a cool product that she uses to hold her money, ipod, phone, keys etc. while she's running. It's an elastic, adjustable waist belt with a small nylon pouch that stretches and can really hold a lot (including a passport). Though I'm not a runner, I bought one for travel. If you're interested, the product is called "SPIbelt." I found it online for a few vendors but then decided to order it straight from the company.

Is it worn under clothing or exposed in front?
I've got a thing against any pouch worn in the front exposed. They're screaming ''Come get me.I've got all my valuables here for the taking!"

I use two from Eagle Creek. The first is a cool nylon waist belt that I wear under my shirt and pants. I use this one for the big bills, spare credit/ATM cards and sometimes my passport. The other one hangs around my neck and is worn under my shirt -- that one carries the day's spending money and credit/ATM card for shopping. It's big enough and has enough compartments to carry several currencies in separate compartments and even local change. The only problem I have with it is that it can get soaked with sweat if it's hot.

Using two different travel wallets means I am protecting all of my money but anyone watching me to look for it will only see the stuff I feel I can lose for one day.

I didn't find having walleted cash a problem during my tour of Costa Rica in 2007, and I'm not a big fan of Money Belts, as they are never practical. And on this trip I was Cash Heavy due to the expectation of being in ATMless towns.

That being said, My Father, who was on the tour with me, had his DLSR, lenses and another camera stolen on a Bus in San Jose, and they LEFT over $600 USD in cash alone that was in the same bag (we'd have preferred they stole the cash, the photos on the cameras were the only thing that could not be replaced).

So I'd recommend keeping an eye on your bag, more than your wallet/purse.

When I travel I carry a "dummy" wallet with 10$ and some expired credit cards and paper to make the wallet look real. But I keep my money in another place and only enough for what I need that day..This way if I get robbed they get a wallet but move on quickly as to not really know what I gave them..

Jimshu, it's worn under the clothing and fits snug to the skin.
