Uganda-Kenya July 23

Postby denker » Sun May 29, 2011 11:54 am

Hi,
My wife and I are taking Gap's Uganda-Kenya safari starting July 23. We would appreciate hearing from anyone with experience of this particular trip - especially with respect to safety issues (cameras and cash in hotel rooms), infections, and on what to do in Jinja (we're not into rafting). Any tips on photography will also be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Hey there,

I've been to Uganda with another operator, so I might be able to answer some of your questions. What specifically would you like to know in regards to safety and photography? I did rafting in Jinja so I can't help there, but I have to say that floating up the Nile in the blazing sun is an absolutely most amazing experience.
All this travelling and I still never know what to pack.

Be sure to search/browse the Africa Destination Forum for tips on your trip. Questions posted in that forum get more exposure and specific questions are more likely to get an answer.

I haven't done this particular trip...but I'll try to answer some questions. Most hotel receptions have a safe if you want to lock things up, you'll PROBABLY be okay leaving stuff locked in your room but it's best not to leave things out...remove the temptation. In some cases I have put valuable in a part of my bag that I can lock. Overall, I would recommend asking your tour leader what they suggest.

Rafting in Jinja is arranged though one of two companies...Nile River Explorers or Adrift. Likely Gap Adventures will recommend one of them for the group. But, if you check out their websites, you can find some other activities they offer.

As for health...I'd suggest asking your doctor what vaccinations he/she recommends. I took malaria pills.

I haven't been everywhere, but it's on my list

I've been to Uganda, solo, female, with another tour operator and since I had been white water rafting before in New Zealand, I wasn't too interested in "rafting with the crocodiles". I chose to sit in an open air bar, overlooking the Nile river and enjoying a few Tuskers with some of the friends I had made. Great afternoon comparing stories and sharing some laughs. I had no problems in any of the countries I visited in Africa. I would go there before I would consider Mexico again.... :(
